I haven't heard when selections will be announced. I don't think the "preferences tool" is an official vote, it is just another tool to aid the program committee in selecting sessions. SQLRally had a vote, while this is more of a survey being used to guide the selection team. At least that's what I think it is planned for. I could be wrong since I'm not on the selection team this year (my choice). My understanding is that the preference vote is to get an idea of the types of sessions that people would like to see, not necessarily (key word) act as a literal vote. I hate the thought of voting on sessions because then we'd be spammed (with me leading the charge) by speakers trying to get your attention. I needed a bath after the blatant begging and horrific spam I did to try to get votes for SQL Rally pre-con. I'd hate to have to do that all the time.
Correct - not a literal vote but it is supposed to be a tool to help make the decision. For instance, if there are two sessions that are very close and only one can be picked, then reference the popular vote. That is one possible use for those votes.

You're assuming that had anything at all to do with it, and you weren't elected based on the merits of your skills and your presentation.

Lol. You remember the begging for votes the the SQLServerPedia blog awards? I suspect most of the reason I won was that I begged more (here and twitter) than the other contenders.
Great for a popularity contest, not so good for conference presentations.

I know voting isn't over yet, but does anyone know if PASS has a date by which speakers will know if their submitted sessions have been selected for the Summit?
In 2009 it was first week of June.

Yeah, I had talked to the guy who beat me, turns out his whole office was hitting up all their family & friends to make sure the vote went the "right" way. All I did was spam you guys, twitter, and all my blog readers. I didn't think to hit up the family too. Blech! (although kudos to him, he wasn't doing the begging, it was others & me).

How else were we going to make sure the word got out for SQLRally? 😀
Honestly, I think a "guided" vote is a great idea. I think for this year's Summit there were over 650 sessions submitted, you can't put them all out for a vote, but you could put out 2-3 sessions per speaking slot for a vote. Remember that while there are like 168 sessions at the Summit, only about 1/2 are community sessions, the others are guaranteed to MS. So you'd be looking at reading somewhere between 150-250 abstracts and if the vote is staggered as it was for SQLRally you can only vote on tracks that interest you and you have more time to read the abstracts. This would weed out the obviously poor abstracts, which doesn't mean that they wouldn't be the best sessions, but you have to start somewhere, and still allow the community to build the schedule.

Glad you enjoyed it, Gus (and everyone else). Sorry I didn't get down there to see you, but I needed the downtime. Would have canceled anyway since my wife was out on a sales trip Thur/Fri.We're trying to get the Rally here in Denver, so maybe we'll get some of you to come way out west 😉
I would fly to Denver for that one. Lot's of cheap flights from Phoenix. As long as it isn't in January, I spent a full January in Denver early in my career when I was a telco engineer. Working in the cold in Denver was one of the reasons I chose to live and work in warmer climates like South Florida and Phoenix, Arizona.

Saw Steve's mention of Denver for next year's US SQLRally, I say US because there is SQLRally Nordic in Sweden in November and I believe Australia is in the midst of trying to put one together as well. There are a couple of cities in the running for next year's US SQLRally and there will be a community vote sometime in June. I know that I'd visit any of the cities being considered (I don't know if I can name them because they aren't finalists yet) and likely bring at least my wife, if not the whole family. You mean those cities mentioned here[/url]? Yep, I think I'd go to any of those cities also.
Well, I guess I could have named them then. I wasn't sure, so better safe than sorry.
All the US cities are in warm climates (usually) so I'd probably go to any of them. I wanted to go to Orlando but the timing wasn't right. (Except Denver in January)

I think we need to get them to Pheonix in July, then hold a SQLRally as a picnic. :Whistling:
