Are the posted questions getting worse?

Just rated some sessions for the PASS Summit. This has to be one of the poorest implementations of a rating tool I've seen, but I did manage to get Gail's, Wayne's, Jeff's, and Grant's sessions picked.

    http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2011/Speakers/SessionPreferencing.aspx?spid=113&p=1&preferred=False

Absolutely awesome, Steve. I didn't know such a thing existed. Thank you very much for the votes. Let's see if we can get everyone on thread to vote.

Shameless beg... I REALLY like teaching and, even though I have to pay for everything myself, I'd love the opportunity to present at this year's PASS. :w00t:

I voted for your sessions Jeff. And for the other sessions of Threadizens.

    (they all seem mighty interesting)

Awesome. Thanks, Koen. It took me a while to vote... first, the Threadizens and not just because they're on SSC... they all have interesting stuff. Then, for the other things that I'd like to see if I get there.

I've got a MSDN Livemeeting going on this afternoon (European time). Two demo's of each 15 minutes, so 30 minutes of talking.

Any tips from the professionals around here on preparation?

(I'd say drink a lot of water, but then I'm afraid I will have to go to the bathroom :-))

    If I'm not too late...

Drink some hot water or hot tea before the presentation to loosen up your throat. Coffee & soda = BAD. Make sure you do go to the bathroom before your presentation, and speak from your diaphragm, not your throat / upper lungs. (Draw your breaths in deep, towards the stomach and diaphragm, and push them out the same way.)

Hmmmm, next time I will drink some soup. Will that work?

Depends on the type of soup. Chicken or beef broth based soups (or just broth) are okay. But anything creamy or with milk in it is a bad idea as it coats your throat and makes it close up. That's why you don't want to drink anything cold either.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) will be in Washington D.C. on May 20th, doing a mass autograph session from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. (or 7:30, I can't remember which) in the Washington Hilton (1919 Connecticut NW). This event is open to the public and I will be one of the signing authors.

I will have copies of all three Pirate books and "A Career Guide to Your Job in Hell" for sale and am also willing to sign any copies you may already have of Transformers: Legends or Shadowrun books that I've proofread / written for.

If you're in the area, I'd love to see you.

Hey all, sorry I fell off the earth a bit, even when I had an article go up. Thanks for the applause those who posted, and specifically to Koen for fielding the one specific question that came up. 🙂

In regards to this series I'm writing, a question for the folks here. Which of these would you like to see more:

    - A business side look at why businesses should hire DBA's, and where's the value over hiring app programmers who can write sql.

    - Moving on: How to work with your employer to NOT burn your bridges.

    - Team dynamics: Ways to become involved with your new employer successfully.

Can PM me if we don't want to fire up a long discussion here.

The speaking-from-the-stomach-thing isn't something I'm very good at, but I will try to work on it.

Thanks for the advice. (I have more sessions to give in the coming months, so it sure will come in handy)

Chicken broth should work really well.

Gail, sent four devs to your Catch-All Queries blog entry today. Thanks again for writing that. They all got it and one even got excited about it. That makes about 10-billion people I've had to refer over there. (I might be exagerating that last bit by a slight amount.)

One of them got excited? Chain him to the desk! He cannot be allowed to leave. :hehe:

Talk about timely, my boss just came over and asked me to write a catch-all query. I'm off to read! Thanks Gail!

Scotch broth, cock-a-leekie, highland lentil soup, and Garlic soup are all good; but if you use the last try not to breath on the audience. Lemon juice mixed with lukewarm water is pretty good too.
