    You attending or presenting ?

    SQLSaturday #75 - Columbus 2011 on Jun 11, 2011

As much as I'd like to try presenting, I'll just be over-committing myself (again), so I'm just leaving it at attendee, not even going to volunteer this time around so that if I have to bail they won't hate me as much.

Just rated some sessions for the PASS Summit. This has to be one of the poorest implementations of a rating tool I've seen, but I did manage to get Gail's, Wayne's, Jeff's, and Grant's sessions picked.

    http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2011/Speakers/SessionPreferencing.aspx?spid=113&p=1&preferred=False

Vote for Grant and my Precon? Please? *shameless begging*

    😀

Second on the rating tool issue... it keeps making me log back in after selecting a speaker. *mutter* Still, I'll happily mark my favorite people to learn from as preferred sessions, even if it's an annoying process to do it.

Apparently PASS has some people looking at the problem. Just hope they do more than look...

Learning to say "no" is important. I've missed some events this year, but it's paid back in better mental health. Can't over do it. Great blog from Brian Kelley on this today: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/brian_kelley/archive/2011/05/10/know-your-limits.aspx

    Indeed, all good sessions.

Can we conclude Paul (sqlkiwi) got selected too ?

Anyway I also voted for his sessions.

If his speaker skills are only a small percentage of his sql skills, the room will explode more than once due to awesomeness :w00t:

Gail, sent four devs to your Catch-All Queries blog entry today. Thanks again for writing that. They all got it and one even got excited about it. That makes about 10-billion people I've had to refer over there. (I might be exagerating that last bit by a slight amount.)

That is indeed mandatory poetry !

It is a ref in my ppt on "sprocs for devs" too

No one's been selected. That's all the submitted sessions. I doubt they'll have a list of selected sessions for quite some time.

Indeed, picking a weeks sessions out of a 53*20 submitted number will be a hell of a job. ( they also need to fit in a couple of MS and other sponsor sessions )

Shameless beg... I REALLY like teaching and, even though I have to pay for everything myself, I'd love the opportunity to present at this year's PASS. :w00t:

    I'm with you!

Hey Threadizens - how about helping your fellow Threadizens go to the PASS Summit in Oct by voting for their sessions. Besides myself, Gail, Grant, Jeff, Paul and Steve all have sessions submitted. If I missed anyone, please follow up so we can vote for them!

Absolutely awesome, Steve. I didn't know such a thing existed. Thank you very much for the votes. Let's see if we can get everyone on thread to vote.

  • Hey all, sorry I fell off the earth a bit, even when I had an article go up. Thanks for the applause those who posted, and specifically to Koen for fielding the one specific question that came up. 🙂

In regards to this series I'm writing, a question for the folks here. Which of these would you like to see more:

    - A business side look at why businesses should hire DBA's, and where's the value over hiring app programmers who can write sql.

    - Moving on: How to work with your employer to NOT burn your bridges.

    - Team dynamics: Ways to become involved with your new employer successfully.

Can PM me if we don't want to fire up a long discussion here.

I've got a MSDN Livemeeting going on this afternoon (European time). Two demo's of each 15 minutes, so 30 minutes of talking.

Any tips from the professionals around here on preparation?

(I'd say drink a lot of water, but then I'm afraid I will have to go to the bathroom :-))

    If I'm not too late...

Drink some hot water or hot tea before the presentation to loosen up your throat. Coffee & soda = BAD. Make sure you do go to the bathroom before your presentation, and speak from your diaphragm, not your throat / upper lungs. (Draw your breaths in deep, towards the stomach and diaphragm, and push them out the same way.)

Hmmmm, next time I will drink some soup. Will that work?

The speaking-from-the-stomach-thing isn't something I'm very good at, but I will try to work on it.

Thanks for the advice. (I have more sessions to give in the coming months, so it sure will come in handy)
