Just submitted a QOTD. We'll see how many people tell me I'm wrong and why.

It will be you and me both that are wrong if it goes out 😉

Off to SQLSaturday, the first one in Africa

You can only say that once. I don't know if you had anything to do with it but congratulations either way. 🙂

Secondary assistant organiser (I pretty much just did the liaison with PASS role and some advertising) and speaker.

It went very well. Far better than I feared. Fairly good turnout for here, about 50 people. One speaker cancelled on us last minute, no major technical glitches.

I need to check with PASS, but I think we're the first SQL Saturday to have presentations from remote speakers using Live Meeting.

From my perspective the livemeeting presentations went very well. I had one glitch near the end of my presentation (<5 minutes left) so just wrapped things up.

What did you speak about, Jason?

Tools to use when taking over a database from a documentation perspective.

I work in Orlando and live a few miles outside it

Ah yes. I do see something in your profile about Orlando. So you probably know a little more about the ongoings than I do since you are no doubt in the same group. Open mouth. Insert foot.

It'll be nice to meet you. Bring your swim trunks each day, just in case. Not sure when there will be time to swim, but I'm sure you can sneak you in that awesome pool complex they have.

    Jim

Um, you do realize there's an ocean nearby, right? Or did that move, and nobody told me?

Baahahahaha. I'm about 3h from the nearest ocean (Gulf); 2h 46m drive from Austin. And that ocean is, uh, not the best I've seen. I grew up on Los Angeles and am used to the oceans there. Wow. Nice. Oh, and 35 mins over the hill from 'the valley', like, fur sure.

As for walking distance. I thought L.A. was bad with people driving to go 1/2 mile. In Texas, I don't want to get the mail at the end of the driveway unless I drive. "Nah, I'll get it when I leave the house later." It's pretty bad. And yes, my neighbors do DRIVE to visit one another. We are slightly in the sticks though. It takes 45 minutes round trip to fly through a drive-through at the closest Mickey-D's. That's driving country roads at about 60MPH most of the way.

Maybe we are closer than you, but you didn't define what you meant by "nearby". To me, nearby has a different definition. I'm about 20-25 minutes away from Jax Beach (from work, about 5 minutes). That's a lot closer to ocean than Gus is.

And Gus didn't define "walking distance" either. So I could make fun of him for not being capable of walking three blocks (cause he only mentioned 2) in this Florida heat. (Of course, I'm the person who got mad at my neighbor for constantly begging rides to work at a fast food joint not even 1/2 a mile away. That, to me, is still walking distance.)

    HA! Got you both.

Brandie - are you going to #sqlrally?

Not unless they want me there as a volunteer. I'm broke from all the other conferences I'm going to this year and my proposed sessions were unpopular.

Are you at least going to hang out at all of the after-events? Man, I'm still excited about that awesome hotel pool! And, it is slightly closer to the venue than the ocean.

Just rated some sessions for the PASS Summit. This has to be one of the poorest implementations of a rating tool I've seen, but I did manage to get Gail's, Wayne's, Jeff's, and Grant's sessions picked.

Vote for Grant and my Precon? Please? *shameless begging*

Gail, sent four devs to your Catch-All Queries blog entry today. Thanks again for writing that. They all got it and one even got excited about it. That makes about 10-billion people I've had to refer over there. (I might be exagerating that last bit by a slight amount.)

One of them got excited? Chain him to the desk! He cannot be allowed to leave. :hehe:

Probably not. I have to work and am 2 hours drive away from Orlando. So I'd hit the town just as rush hour started and leave just as ... well, okay. Orlando evening rush never really ends. So getting caught up in Disney traffic just would not be entertaining.

I hope everyone has a wonderful time, though. I need to figure out how to get better sessions that people want to vote for next year.

There are reasons that, during the interview process, I recommended him over the other applicants. Enthusiasm was a part of that.

Absolutely awesome, Steve. I didn't know such a thing existed. Thank you very much for the votes. Let's see if we can get everyone on thread to vote.

Shameless beg... I REALLY like teaching and, even though I have to pay for everything myself, I'd love the opportunity to present at this year's PASS. :w00t:

First year I've seen it, but it is a good idea. I talked to them about this last year because I said that they were just guessing what the community wanted without input.

SQL Rally put it into action. I'm betting they were awed by the response Rally got on the issue.
