I work in Orlando and live a few miles outside it

Ah yes. I do see something in your profile about Orlando. So you probably know a little more about the ongoings than I do since you are no doubt in the same group. Open mouth. Insert foot.

It'll be nice to meet you. Bring your swim trunks each day, just in case. Not sure when there will be time to swim, but I'm sure you can sneak you in that awesome pool complex they have.

    Jim

Um, you do realize there's an ocean nearby, right? Or did that move, and nobody told me?

hmmm, IIRC the ocean isn't very close to Orlando. An hour or so each way.

Orlando is, despite all rumors to the contrary, 40 miles from the Atlantic and almost 90 miles from the Gulf. It's a bit of a walk, if that's what you were planning, whereas the hotel pool is definitely within walking distance. For that matter, Sea World is nearly in walking distance, if it weren't Florida and, hence, hot. Sea World Aquatica is about 2 blocks from where I work, and the water rides and such are sometimes audible from the parking lot here. The hotel is only 3 or 4 miles from where I work.

Apparently it moved and no one sent you the invite to the new "ocean warming" party. @=) The ocean is at least 1-2 hours drive east of Orlando (which is more in the center of the state).

I blame the Japanese earthquake. Look what it did to all the coastal towns. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/09/japan-earthquake-shifted-_n_859353.html

  • Ha! You bunch of spoiled rotten SQLRally-ers. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&biw=1132&bih=700&q=8101+n+high+st+columbus+ohio+43235&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=8101+N+High+St,+Columbus,+OH+43235&gl=us&ei=42TJTeSHGIS0rAfzwNGgBQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBcQ8gEwAA

That's roughly 75 miles in any direction. I don't see any ocean, (it takes me a couple hours just to get to Lake Erie, fer crissakes, and that's not as much fun) so 40 minutes to an hour would be just fine by me 😉

let's see, my closest ocean is....500 miles, so about 8 hours away. IIRC, *EVERYTHING* in Florida is closer to the ocean than me.

  • Maybe we are closer than you, but you didn't define what you meant by "nearby". To me, nearby has a different definition. I'm about 20-25 minutes away from Jax Beach (from work, about 5 minutes). That's a lot closer to ocean than Gus is.

And Gus didn't define "walking distance" either. So I could make fun of him for not being capable of walking three blocks (cause he only mentioned 2) in this Florida heat. (Of course, I'm the person who got mad at my neighbor for constantly begging rides to work at a fast food joint not even 1/2 a mile away. That, to me, is still walking distance.)

    HA! Got you both.

From work (the 2-block distance), it is walking distance. From the hotel where the Rally is taking place, it's closer to 3-4 miles. That's walking distance, but not in 95 degrees (F), 50% humidity, and probably T-storms (tomorrow's weather here).

I used to walk 3 miles to work in Los Angeles, even in the summer, but that was at 6 AM, and LA isn't hot then, and isn't humid ever. My current commute is almost 50 miles, so I really don't have the option of walking.

Just rated some sessions for the PASS Summit. This has to be one of the poorest implementations of a rating tool I've seen, but I did manage to get Gail's, Wayne's, Jeff's, and Grant's sessions picked.

Thanks Steve! I got yours also. Don't forget to get Paul's also.

That interface is pretty awful. Going page-by-page from page one is pathetic after page 20 (where the combobox starts needing scrolling); you can't select speakers without also specifying the track (so you have to visit all tracks to ensure you see all abstracts by a speaker).

If you're going to vote (and you should), it might be easier to start at page 62 and work backwards - the combobox will always show the previous page.

Absolutely awesome, Steve. I didn't know such a thing existed. Thank you very much for the votes. Let's see if we can get everyone on thread to vote.

Shameless beg... I REALLY like teaching and, even though I have to pay for everything myself, I'd love the opportunity to present at this year's PASS. :w00t:

  • Gail, sent four devs to your Catch-All Queries blog entry today. Thanks again for writing that. They all got it and one even got excited about it. That makes about 10-billion people I've had to refer over there. (I might be exagerating that last bit by a slight amount.)
