I just registered for the PASS Rally in Orlando.
Sounds great. I'm flying out of Austin, TX tomorrow afternoon and I'll be in Grants session on Wed.
If you have an iPad/iPhone or an Android, make sure you get the 'guidebook' http://www.sqlpass.org/sqlrally/2011/orlando/Agenda/Schedule.aspx. Awesome little e-book that lets you schedule and all that.
Is your rooming all figured out? If not, email me. I booked my rooms over a month ago and didn't realize how luxurious the hotel was until about 2 days ago. Wow. I've stayed in a ghetto Holiday Inn in Houston for slightly more per night then this resort. I'm impressed.
I have a small part on the show on Thu eve for the 'Overdrive' session with Kevin Kline about 'how to interview'. I'll be an interviewee. Should be fun. Show up for that and bring your throwing tomatoes!
When are you flying in?

I just registered for the PASS Rally in Orlando. Wasn't sure I'd be able to get the time/money for it, but it worked out. See you there if you'll be there!Grant, I couldn't afford the extra $199 for your pre-session (or whatever they're calling those), otherwise I'd check it out.
This'll be my first SQL event other than presenting at Jack's group a little over a year ago. Should be interesting.
Glad to hear you are going to make it. I think you'll enjoy it. Be sure to catch me at the registration desk throughout the conference as that's where I'll be spending most of my time as a volunteer.

No worries. Track me down. Not on Wednesday I'll be too distracted, but Wednesday night or one of the other days will be great.

Off to SQLSaturday, the first one in AfricaYou can only say that once. I don't know if you had anything to do with it but congratulations either way. 🙂
Secondary assistant organiser (I pretty much just did the liaison with PASS role and some advertising) and speaker.
It went very well. Far better than I feared. Fairly good turnout for here, about 50 people. One speaker cancelled on us last minute, no major technical glitches.
I need to check with PASS, but I think we're the first SQL Saturday to have presentations from remote speakers using Live Meeting.
From my perspective the livemeeting presentations went very well. I had one glitch near the end of my presentation (<5 minutes left) so just wrapped things up.
What did you speak about, Jason?

I work in Orlando and live a few miles outside it (towards Tampa). My drive to the rally is 4 miles less than my usual daily commute. So, I really wasn't planning on any flying. Though, the way I drive may make a liar of me on that one!

Ah yes. I do see something in your profile about Orlando. So you probably know a little more about the ongoings than I do since you are no doubt in the same group. Open mouth. Insert foot.
It'll be nice to meet you. Bring your swim trunks each day, just in case. Not sure when there will be time to swim, but I'm sure you can sneak you in that awesome pool complex they have.

I've got a MSDN Livemeeting going on this afternoon (European time). Two demo's of each 15 minutes, so 30 minutes of talking.
Any tips from the professionals around here on preparation?
(I'd say drink a lot of water, but then I'm afraid I will have to go to the bathroom :-))

I would say to ask questions often. Sure, they'd be rhetorical, but it sometimes helps to pause just a little more after the question to help engage them mentally. This makes the flow work nicely.
A good example is Paul Randall's blog. If you read it, he writes in an interactive way, even though the audience is a reader. Mentally works great.
Another one of my favorite actual presenter is Kevin Kline. His presentations actually are interactive, waiting for an audience response, but he still finds a way to include rhetorical questions none-the-less. very mentally engaging.
There's my $.02. In euros, my advice is even less valuable!

If I'm not too late...
Drink some hot water or hot tea before the presentation to loosen up your throat. Coffee & soda = BAD. Make sure you do go to the bathroom before your presentation, and speak from your diaphragm, not your throat / upper lungs. (Draw your breaths in deep, towards the stomach and diaphragm, and push them out the same way.)

The amusing part is that I work for a company that markets Orlando as a destination. Both for the Disney, et al, family stuff, but also for conventions and seminars and meetings and such. Going to the rally actually makes me a target demographic for my own employer's marketing!
