Are the posted questions getting worse?

Ninja, I can hardly throw stones on that particular point. Being a speed reader tends to work against me on the online forums.

Same here... hence #1 for amount of wrong answers. I just had to give it up and "waste" the few extra seconds to get the question right. You know what? I usually give better answers for that.

In his case it seems that he just doesn't understand english, doesn't read the question beyond the first 10 words or just doesn't care about the OP and SSC.

Bottom line is we need to watch him, very closely, if we want to keep the HQ community we have here.

Things like that always make me wonder why the person bothers posting in the first place.

It's a game for some people like that. Others, it is about the EGO. And others, it's just that they want to help but are behind on the learning curve and don't or can't admit it.

Well definitly EGO and can't admit it for him. He's been promoted to senior DBA in his company "recently". Now he sees that he's far from that.

Now seriously how do you get to senior DBA in Windows / IBM, ORACLE 9,10 AND SQL 2005/2008 in only 3 years? Did he work 10 000 hours / year or something?

You get to be a senior DBA in all those things when no-one else in your company has more than 1 year experience. Also when your boss doesn't check your alphabet soup and just assumes you really have all those certs.

When you encounter a problem, if the solution isn't readily evident go back to the start and check your assumptions.

Since I newer around here, how did you solve this problem in the past? I guess everyone round-robin to take a turn without a dog pile, and deal with his verbal return assaults?

Even if he does this for SEO, he is getting exposure on the most popular place. Bad exposure. He is looking like an idiot. People googling will now read even more garbage than yesterday from him. I guess he is satisfied with that in exchange for fooling the folks that go straight to his blog.

I don't see how we can control someone who is dishonest and insincere. And even if steve censors him, what'll stop him from doing it again under a yahoo, GMail or any other account? I figure the only way is to constantly (and still politely, although difficult) correct him without a dog pile until he gives up.

Then again, I've never been involved in this before. I've only danced with Gail and Paul a few times. That's when I decided to start 'measuring twice and cutting once'. I'm still having difficulty writing in a clear fashion and using words that DON'T mean two different things. Stupid english! Oh wait, it's not English' fault. Stupid Jim! New skill for me to learn.

    Jim

I've been out of it in the last few years. The only refference I have is CELKO. After 100 posts telling him to shut it and be polite and started to change a little bit.

The difference is that while his tone was out of order and unprofessional his advices are usually spot on. Not the case with who shalled not be named!

That's another thing that's been bothering me. How do you get all those certs in 2-3 years without using braindumps? Or passing with the absolute minimum score?

I was under the impression that you had to have <some> understanding of the product before being able to pass.

My guess (assuming he's actually certified) his that he just learned 1000s of questions and was able to retain the info for a couple days.

That would explain why he can't seem to use that knowledge in a situation and troubleshoot something.

That's the main thing I have against certs. People learn what they need for the test and then don't know what they're doing when they come across something that wasn't on the test or they forget it within a few weeks. Not all people, obviously, but the people who are good would still be good without the certs.

And now I feel like I'm talking about breath mints...

  • Note for Steve: Man, my quote feature is buggy from my iPad. I try to quote Gail's middle-of-the-page post, but it feeds in the Gail post from the top of this page. Strange. Began occurring about when the briefcase was implemented for the forums.

Anyway, thanks for the links Gail. I think I read the main post a month ago. I'll read it more carefully and the related articles.

It's not only you. When you hit quote after a new post has been added to the page (after your page load is finished), you quote one post up.

I've had this happen at least 10 times... after 6-7 I stopped thinking I was crazy and finally figured it out :hehe:.

  • Stefan - that is one reason why I have no certs. I began studying many times from back in the late 90's for an MCSE and MCSD but never completed. Again when .NEat was invented. Again when .NET 2.0 came out. When I started on my CISSP, I became dismayed by a large percentage of fact-cramming test takers who got a cert then did a flushcleanbuffers. Then I was against certs for a number of years.

Now, I am learning to appreciate certs to fill in a nice baseline (I have great peeks and valleys in what I know) and I'm quite close to getting my first cert in 2008. Then I'll be a super pro. Uh, at installing SQL Server. It's a start though.

The main reasons I have no certs is because there are so many of them and because by the time I think I'm ready to take one, a newer one is out! I just don't want to be spending the $ on something that expires so quickly.
