Are the posted questions getting worse?

Ninja, I can hardly throw stones on that particular point. Being a speed reader tends to work against me on the online forums.

Same here... hence #1 for amount of wrong answers. I just had to give it up and "waste" the few extra seconds to get the question right. You know what? I usually give better answers for that.

In his case it seems that he just doesn't understand english, doesn't read the question beyond the first 10 words or just doesn't care about the OP and SSC.

Bottom line is we need to watch him, very closely, if we want to keep the HQ community we have here.

Things like that always make me wonder why the person bothers posting in the first place.

He wants backlinks for his <extremely questionable blog> and become an authority in the field at the same time (that's why he posts on the top 5 db forums). Follow the money...

The problem is he doesn't understand squat about sql. He knows a few facts hence the reason he has a gazillion certifs in 5 unrelated products. But he has 0 APPLIED knowledge. If I had a certif I'd be ashamed to have my name besides his.

    Ah, I'd missed the backlinking.

  • Ya it's a naked link but it still has decent weight in the google algorithm, especially with 100s to 1000s of posts across the top 3-6 db forums. That's why at some point I was thinking he was an outsourced guy in india with "some" sql experience / training (common practice to get traffic to a blog and seo). But apparently he really is has a title as senior DBA somewhere, God help that company.

More to the point is the endless list of certifs in his signature. At some point if you search for a cert code, his name will be on top (or near) the top of the search engine... boom instant celebrity / expert status.

The problem is he can't do the job, period.

As I said earlier... follow to money!

Have you noticed that's not a signature? At SSC, the signature is not included when you quote a post (quote mine, you'll see name and tag are missing), but if you quote his posts you get name and alphabet soup. Hence he's either typing or copy-pasting it every time.

Nice catch. That pretty much proves he's mindlessly posting to get something personnal out of it. He's not here to help anyone but himself (or his hiring boss).

I'm only reporting if he crosses the line to insulting. Like this morning, when he called Craig "mentally retarted"

Ditto - happens to me quite a bit too

It's a game for some people like that. Others, it is about the EGO. And others, it's just that they want to help but are behind on the learning curve and don't or can't admit it.

Well definitly EGO and can't admit it for him. He's been promoted to senior DBA in his company "recently". Now he sees that he's far from that.

Now seriously how do you get to senior DBA in Windows / IBM, ORACLE 9,10 AND SQL 2005/2008 in only 3 years? Did he work 10 000 hours / year or something?

Reminds me of a CV I received once.

5/5 on 3 versions of Windows, 2 versions of SQL Server and 2 versions of Oracle, with 2 years experience.

I wanted to interview him just for the fun of it. My team lead refused. (spoilsport) :hehe:

  • Since I newer around here, how did you solve this problem in the past? I guess everyone round-robin to take a turn without a dog pile, and deal with his verbal return assaults?

Even if he does this for SEO, he is getting exposure on the most popular place. Bad exposure. He is looking like an idiot. People googling will now read even more garbage than yesterday from him. I guess he is satisfied with that in exchange for fooling the folks that go straight to his blog.

I don't see how we can control someone who is dishonest and insincere. And even if steve censors him, what'll stop him from doing it again under a yahoo, GMail or any other account? I figure the only way is to constantly (and still politely, although difficult) correct him without a dog pile until he gives up.

Then again, I've never been involved in this before. I've only danced with Gail and Paul a few times. That's when I decided to start 'measuring twice and cutting once'. I'm still having difficulty writing in a clear fashion and using words that DON'T mean two different things. Stupid english! Oh wait, it's not English' fault. Stupid Jim! New skill for me to learn.

You're still junior after 1-2 years in ANY of those. I happened to be slightly past that only because I read and <tried to> answer 4000 questions in a single year. Nothing else but work will get you there!

But I'm preaching in my choir so what's the point :w00t:.

Correct bad info when it appears, provide references if necessary. Report to Steve if things slip over the line to insulting.

Problem is it's more work for everyone else and it's not doing SSC's reputation any good.

Written back when we had a previous case of this: http://sqlinthewild.co.za/index.php/2009/01/22/bad-advice/ (and the two articles that link to it, see the comments)
