So now we have someone saying don't REORG indexes only REBUILD and you don't need to do statistics maintenance.http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1094168-146-3.aspx

No, I'm not asking for an assist, much less a pile-on please.

Maybe one reason the questions are more basic is that the help on books online etc. is worse and harder to get to than before. Also the dialogs are terrible in comparison to sql server 2000.

Welcome to a thread whose topic varies by the day.
Why do you say the contents are worse than before? With each version of SQL, BoL is getting bigger, more detailed and containing far, far more. I admit, it's confusing sometimes, but there's no shortage of information.
As for hard-to-get-to, for syntax it's just a case of having cursor on the word and pressing F1, much like it was in Query analyser.

What's so special about CD's provided by IBM that a Business Analyst is required? (or what does IBMCDBA is supposed to mean?)

IBM is making their money these days by being incomprehensible. You need a Business Analyst to figure out what the CDs are for.

Well often dialogs consist of a list of stuff with no guidance and worse hide stuff that are critically important (see analysis services dialogs). The bol was reset for sql server 2005 and not sure its as good as sql server 2000 documentation even now, tend to lean more on blogs etc. for the api's etc.

I'm assuming this refers to something recently in the conversation? I must have missed it if I did.
Phil, if you're responding to things at the beginning of this thread they're just not relevent to the discussion any more. This is the water cooler around here at this point, and we swap topics every few pages.

IBM Certified Database Associate (DB2). From what Google returns it's an entry-level cert, probably about equivalent to the MCTS, for DB2

Responding to me, and I assume to the starting post of this thread (2 years ago? 3?)

You are welcome. Works for blogs as well.

Not something near the beginning of the thread; it's a response to something Gail posted just 36 minutes before he responded.
A little earlier he had suggested that BoL has deteriorated since the SQL 2000; in some ways he's right - as it has got bigger so it has acquired more bad pages and errors, become more difficult to find things in, so it's harder to use than before. On the other hand, it covers a lot more than it used to because SQL Server has become a bigger and better beast than it uised to be, and the increased difficulty of finding things is a natural consequence of having to look in a bigger haystack; the increased amount of bad or misleading information doesn't mean that a higher proportion of it than before is bad, either.

Yeah, somehow I missed that. Twice. I saw his earlier post but somehow missed Gail's response to it.

I like what they're trying to do with BOL. It's pretty easy to end up on a wiki-walk for a while when you're trying to research information, even if some of it seems off. It certainly gives you enough to go keyword hunting after the fact for anything that you're unsure of or seems off afterwards on the net. So much yummy goodness on the net.

Well, I learn something new everyday. Today may be a great day because I learned something quite by accident. Someone sent me the code for a CLR with a .cs extension. I mistakenly double-clicked on it and this seeming wonderful IDE called "Visual Studio Tools for Applications" opened up and loaded the file. Doing a bit of research on the product, I found a paragraph on an MS website that says...
Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2.0 gives you a way to enable end users to customize your existing applications using Visual Basic and Visual C#. You can incorporate a custom integrated development environment (IDE) that is similar to the Visual Studio IDE into the application. End-user developers can use the IDE to customize the application by creating add-ins that extend the functionality of the application to meet their needs.
I've not loaded anything special other than SQL Server 2008 and Office 2003 so it must have come with SQL Server. I've resisted loading Visual Studio Visual Basic and Visual C simply because I don't have much cause to use them. HOWEVER, it looks like that has been done for me to a lesser extent. I realize that VSTA (NOT to be mistaken for "VISTA") are probably smaller subsets of the larger products but I have to ask, does anyone know if one can write and compile CLR's with VSTA? If so, is there a good book or URL anyone would like to recommend for using either tool especially to write some rather simple CLR's? I may go over to "the dark side", yet.
