Does Zip still have the 4GB limit ? :ermm:I used the open source  7zip free solution. ( I don't know if RAR is actually free)
It is able to compress to split files of a given number of MB/compress file as well as password protection.
and IMO it has a small footprint.
Nope. Zip 14.5 can zip up to 16 exabytes.
in another reply ...
So how is it for scheduling automatic jobs? The built-in zip is very limited, that's why we got the full version.
So it must be the limited version I know off. 😉
16 exabytes will do ... for the moment :hehe:
The 4 gig limit went away in version 9 or 10 I think.
I'm sure the 128 bit version of Zip will be able to handle more. : -)

Cross posting Jeff? 🙂Higher compression. Ability to split the archive into multiple files (great for huge archives going onto CD/DVD or for getting through email limits). Encryption and passwords. There's far more.
Whether you get higher compression with RAR or with ZIP depends on what you are compressing. ZIP allowed archives to be split into multiple files back in the days of floppy discs, are you saying that's been removed. It certainly has encryption and passwords.
The RAR util can open all sorts of archives, from iso files, rar and zip, tar.gz, tonnes of others.
If I had to suggest one tool that people get for compressed files, it would be rar, not zip. The build-in zip (in later versions of Windows) is very limited.
Yes, the windows built-in ZIP is indeed very limited. And in recent times RAR has improved to the extent that it's more useful than a full blown ZIP; a few years ago I'd have said ZIP was the better bet, but now it'scertainly RAR.

For anyone here who regularly works on the web app/public and private content coding side of things, if you wouldn't mind taking a breeze by this post, I'd appreciate it: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1095228-61-1.aspx
Yes, I know I'm in the wrong forum. That's kind of on purpose. I tried a 'right' forum and felt like a tether ball.

With a side of pork chops.
Me: Excuse, me what's 2+2 and how can I get to 10 like that?
A: Well, first you take the derivative of warp using Malcom's theory of Detecting BullshitArtistry while multiplying with a split infinitive.
Me: Uhm, WTF?
Positive side note however: it is making me aware again of when I start flying over people's heads here, so there was value to my playing tether-ball.

@#$%^Had a $%^& bug bite my hand while grabbing hay for the horses... now it's all swollen and I'm off to see the doctor.
(The "bright spot" in this is that this should give me several hours to work on reading the SQL 2008 Internals book...)
Ouch. Are you allergic to bug bites or was this just an extremely nasty bug?
Well, yes. I'm overly sensitive to them (normal mosquito bites look like a welt), but I think that was a spider bite. I'm actually able to close my hand now, so the meds are definitely helping out.

Yup. Booked flights so that I get 4 and a bit days at leisure in the UK after the course. Haven't yet decided where I'll go.

Glad to hear it. That the meds are helping, that is. I was thinking we might not find out what happened if your hand injury made it difficult to type.

Ouch. I had a spider bite once when I was a kid. My hand was swollen for a week. And we don't have poisonous spiders in my country... Go figure. 🙂

Oh man, they couldn't do it in July. I'll be over there from the 11th to the 22nd.
