Cross posting Jeff? 🙂
Higher compression. Ability to split the archive into multiple files (great for huge archives going onto CD/DVD or for getting through email limits). Encryption and passwords. There's far more.
The RAR util can open all sorts of archives, from iso files, rar and zip, tar.gz, tonnes of others.
If I had to suggest one tool that people get for compressed files, it would be rar, not zip. The build-in zip (in later versions of Windows) is very limited.

Someone please tell me the advantage to using RAR files over ZIP files. ZIP files are the defacto compression type... what does RAR do that ZIP does not (except tick me off ;-)).RAR is free?
It's not free. It's shareware.
Just nags, and MVPs can get a free license.

If somebody asked me for a compression tool, I would recommend IZArc, which is free and handles a lot of archive types, including RAR and ZIP.

Does Zip still have the 4GB limit ? :ermm:
I used the open source  7zip free solution. ( I don't know if RAR is actually free)
It is able to compress to split files of a given number of MB/compress file as well as password protection.
and IMO it has a small footprint.

WinRar is free as opposed to WinZip?Is it possible to split a .zip file in multiple compressed files, as is possible with .rar?
Yep, you can split .zip files

Ah, sorry for the assumption. I only needed it to unzip a single file (a downloaded music album) about a year ago and didn't bother looking into it further.

Nope. Zip 14.5 can zip up to 16 exabytes.

For those reasons, it is the first "zip" utility I install on every new workstation.

Thanks, Gianluca. I'll take a look.
Personally, I wouldn't use RAR on a forum when I needed help. I'd use ZIP because I know everyone has that.

So how is it for scheduling automatic jobs? The built-in zip is very limited, that's why we got the full version.

That is definitely one thought every dev should have when choosing software. Which one is likely to cover the most end users.
Using multiple tools for coverage bugs me sometimes. Too much maintenance. But then, I'm not the type of person who buys a toaster that cooks eggs, so I really can't say anything.

You can use Windows Scheduler and the command line utility. IZarc has a command line add-on that handles most requirements.

I'm pretty happy with the scheduler in WinZip, but that's good to know for future projects.

So it must be the limited version I know off. 😉
16 exabytes will do ... for the moment :hehe:
