Are the posted questions getting worse?

Frankly, I learn more when I get a QotD wrong than when I get it right. The points are meaningless - the knowledge, on the other hand, is priceless.

    Awesome - I love that attitude. 😀

Ditto. When you get it right you get a moment of satisfaction. When you get it wrong and there's a good explanation you learn something and that's always more satisfying in the long run. I liked the links you had to each and every answer.

Joined in. Part of the problem is you're going to need a lot more information then this gentleman has provided upfront. He seems willing though, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Out of Curiosity, isnt 90K US or 80K Euro the normal salary for a Sr. DBA?

Definitely depends on region AND size of the company. I'm looking now and I'm seeing everything from 65k-90k. I haven't seen anything in 6 figures.

How far are you willing to move? I have heard of some stuff in NY, Seattle, Las Vegas and Ut.

I'm looking in northern MA, southern ME, and NH.

I had my first phone interview to day and this company, fairly large, really needs a SQL DBA. They are doing backups, but no other maintenance, no DBCC or index and stats maintenance. They don't even think it's important right now. They believe their NetApp SAN keeps them from having IO issues and complained that SQL Server uses too much memory. I'd be willing to bet that they are masking IO issues by adding memory.

I'm guessing in 2 weeks I can improve a ton of stuff just by doing maintenance.

What an amazing day at SQL Saturday #71 in Boston today.

Got to meet heaps of great people including Grant and Stefan K!

If anyone would like to see the slides from my session, you can download the 1MB file here: http://www.sqlsaturday.com/viewsession.aspx?sat=71&sessionid=4119

Wow! And i don't even merit a mention :crying:

It was great to meet you and Stefan. I've now met most of the regulars on the thread. Of the earliest members I think only the OP (Michael Valentine Jones), Jeff, and Alvin are left for me to meet in person.

Still looking forward to meeting everyone else too.

I already took a look. Nicely done! I wish I could have been there to hear the narrative.

I was there, and it was great. It's always exciting to learn from one of the best!

Darn my addled jet-lagged brain - I forgot to mention how great it was to meet Jack Corbett and have a couple of good long chats with him. I really enjoyed his session, and he helped me out a lot. Thanks, Jack!

Oops. I typed out of turn. I loved meeting you. It was bit intimidating having you in my session, but your questions really helped solidify some thoughts in the session.

Really glad you found me helpful. It's the least I could do considering all your contributions!

  • It was very nice to meet you. Did you want my agency contacts so you can call them?

Whoa! What? You're a youngster and you don't live in a cave, how is it that an old <insert inappropriate term here> like myself knows what rickrolling is?

Somehow, Grant, I think I'm older than you are. @=) But thanks for the compliment.

I'd take that bet. I haven't broken 50 yet, which is why I love having Jeff & Allen White around, so someone is older than me, but I'm generally 10 years older than the oldest people I'm hanging around with at these events. Some of the punks like Johnathan Kehyias & Jess Borland can be down right frustrating they're so young.

Don't forget Jorge! I'm early 40's and I feel old around some of these guys and gals!

    Star Trek (the Original)

My mother loves both that and Thunderbirds.

Gail, Low blow aimed at Lynn... 🙂

I remember Star Trek Original though.

I remember ST original. Isn't that on TVLand now?

    That's the thing.

I remember watching both The Monkeys and Original Star Trek as a kid, but they were both in reruns at that point. And I think they were for Brandie too. Starblazers was on around the time those reruns were playing.

Of course, I also remember watching Get Smart, McHales's Navy, Sgt. Bilko, Gilligan's Island, Life of Riley, Car 54, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie, etc... but that was all reruns when I was a kid.

The shows that more accurately date me are the ones I watched in First Run: WKRP, Taxi, M*A*S*H, Magnum PI, Rockford Files, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, Happy Days, etc...

Of these (Get Smart, McHales's Navy, Sgt. Bilko, Gilligan's Island, Life of Riley, Car 54, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie, etc...) I probably saw Sgt Bilko and Car 54 as reruns and remembering them, but the others I saw and remember as first run shows. You could also include Gomer Pyle USMC, The Adamms Family, The Munsters, Lost in Space.

Go Uncle Herman!!! (Extra points for anyone who can figure that one out. Kit, you don't qualify.)

Stefan's list sounds like what I remember seeing. Used to have every episode of M*A*S*H memorized.

The Munsters - easy cheesy lemon squeezy.

MASH is the best of the list so far. I remember all of those shows except Bilko and Life of Riley. I must have watched them all in rerun though.

I watched them all. MASH and Happy Days were regular shows in my life. Who else remembers Saturday night's with Captain Stubing and Tattoo! "De plane! De plane"

I certainly won't turn any down.
