Jeez, that guy (or girl) is lost. One more response and then I'm done. I'm the Scary DBA, not the Saintly DBA.Oh, him. Yeah, I gave up on him first time I encountered him after a few times going in circles with him. Gave it the old college try but I think it's ESL difficulties coupled with a lack of knowledge that's really got him done for here, add to that he can be downright lazy about asking for help.
It's the same questions over & over with ZERO indication that he listened to a word you said in the earlier responses. He just wants the "go faster" button and I can't provide it.
Yeah, tried that with me and I Gibbs-whapped him one. That was close to the time I think I decided to walk away before I wrote some troll generation script... 😎 I don't remember that well. I tried to put it behind me like most bad experiences. :hehe:

I was asked a question a few minutes ago by a developer. Didn't want to laugh in his face, primarily because he didn't believe this either. But at his last job, he was told that in SQL 2008, that a select * was no longer a performance problem. Anyone else heard anything like this?

Maybe, if he's talking about EXISTS queries. (SELECT 1 vs. SELECT *). Reading one of Ben-Gan's books at the moment and he actually prefers the SELECT * and says it has no effect on the optimization.

@Wayne - did I miss something? What's up with the SQLRally logo in your sig? It's the "I'm attending" logo, not the "I'm speaking" one.
Well, now it's the correct one.
And thanks to the magic of the internet, it always has been! (as far as anyone can see...)

I have been meaning to do some performance testing on the whole select * thing. I ran into some cases where select * actually beat the pants off a select with all of the columns listed out. This was an atypical result where I had a realllllllllllly wide select statement. And it was after we upgraded a database from sql 2000 to sql 2008.

That was mildly perturbing because it really limits who can help. Basically saying that you better help within the first couple of minutes or you won't be let into the party.

Yeah and you could go outside and the solution would look better from there and you could always shout at the idiot on the other side 😉

I seriously can't believe Celko did this: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1087228-61-1.aspx
I'm seriously hoping it's followed up with "April Fools!" or something. Just, wow, if not.

I for one would be surprised if that were true , maybe the parsing would be faster, but once the plan is in the cache i doubt it. Though if it were a 'simple' statement ,that may not happen.
Interesting......

Hm - I'd love to know which brand it was, since the stuff I've used (albeit on fairly small areas) seemed to work fine. If you can spare the time to dig the info up, that would be useful.I asked and they said it was Rustoleum. It was facilities that applied it so they were not professional painters, but they weren't IT folk either :-D. Since trying the paint they've moved on to either using bathboard and framing around it or painting the wall white and attaching a sheet of glass in front of it (nice effect, especially when it's spaced a small distance from the wall).
Chad
Yeah, that latter method can look quite nice.
Maybe you could suggest this brand of paint to them and they can try it on a small test area. If it works it'll be cheaper.
I like the glass idea. I wonder if that's feasible in price for a home office... hmmmmm....
Depends on how big an area and what you're willing to spend. (Oh, dear... I sound like a DBA. "It depends.")
Seriously, though - if you don't need anything too large, and you have an Ikea nearby, they have some nice glass "whiteboards" that are easy to mount and easy to work with.
For the size area *I* want, glass is a bit unwieldy and heavy.
Unless I take the top off my dining room table and try to wall mount it - but I don't think it will make it around the corners on the way up the stairs to the room it would need to go in...
On that note, however, local glass guys will often come out, measure, cut, and deliver custom glass for a really reasonable price. The guy who did my table top (I was tired of having a gorgeous wood table at risk from teenagers) was a lot less expensive than I'd expected, and we've gotten years of use out of it. Worth looking into if you want to go the glass route.
