Oh yes... I know it's partially correct. I just couldn't understand why anyone who knows of SQL would bring it up even as partial justification for not performing index maintenance.Agreed. It's applicable in such a narrow set of circumstances.
I had someone at a usergroup meeting a couple years back argue for auto_create and auto_update stats off and a job to delete any stats created on the grounds that they're a waste if you're only ever doing single row selects and updates. It's true, but so, so, so few systems are going to be that way that it's dangerous advice because most people aren't going to understand the conditions.
Yowch. Did you ask them if they actually implemented such a thing?

He had. He was stating that it was a good idea and worked well. I could not convince him otherwise (I was giving my 'Lies, damned lies and Statistics presentation) and I wasn't about to get into an argument in the middle of the presentation.

A positive note to end the (work)week:my SSIS Denali session is selected for the Belgian Community Day! :w00t:
The Community Day is a joint venture of different Microsoft User Groups. My user group, SQLUG (the Belgian PASS chapter), had to provide 2 sessions about SQL Server, and one of them is mine. W00t! 😎
Congrats - would that be German speaking Belgian or French speaking Belgian?
There are also Dutch speaking Belgians 😀
(the majority in fact. The German faction is quite small in our country).
I think the session will be in English, just to make sure everyone in the audience can understand it.

Sounds like "OK, just do it".
Totally useless. I wonder what's the sense of such a reply. I wouldn't even waste the time to type it if I had nothing to say.

I saw that one earlier. I was going to jump in and see if I could help, but it looked like someone else had beat me to it. I'll go back and see if I can give the OP a hand.

Okay, poll time. How many of you are getting tired of Celko and his high horse?
Yep, have been for a number of years now.
I may be wrong, but I think I could count on one hand the number of times any of his posts were truely helpful to the OP.
I don't even look at any of his replies anymore so I couldn't comment. Endless obsessions with portability over all else, total dismissal of SQLCLR, anything to do with XML... must be like developing in a straightjacket.

Maybe a blog post that Microsoft has purchased MySQL from Oracle and that it is integrating it with SQLServer.\I like that....
Edit: The index maintenance suggestion gives me ideas too....
Research time.... (3)
If every threadizen blogged about it, more people would be fooled.
Who's on?
Why bother? SQL Server CE is available as the best joke yet. 😀
If you really want something funny (in a "War of the Worlds" fashion where people riot or kill themselves because they think it's true), puplish an AF article that states that "in order to be compliant with Oracle technology, direct returns to the GUI have been deprecated and future versions SQL Server will require the use of 'Reference Cursors' to make returns to the GUI." or that "In order to meet ANSI standards, ISNULL and GETDATE() have been deprecated." 😛
How will people tell the difference between that and a post by Celko?
Less insulting arrogance. No matter how you tried, you'll never match Celko in those regards.

Tired of his high horse, yes. However, he is often technically correct in his posts, he has an ability to think of good T-SQL solutions (or ANSI-SQL solutions) to real problems, and he has a clear view of what he's trying to accomplish as a technician. If he could get over outmoded, disproven theories of human education, he'd be a good teacher. So I keep trying with him. I don't expect to succeed in getting him to apply manners online, but I hope to.

I realize I just came in from a night of hard alcoholic assistance, but for some damn reason I took that as a challenge, not an insult to Celko.

Considering the number of methods to pull off sequencing, the OP didn't give much information. Of course, that's because the OP is a newbie.
As alluded to in my post there, whoever gave such an assignment to a complete newbie without the assistance of a mentor is a complete moreoff. Even some folks well versed in SQL Server have difficulty in creating and maintaining sequences without them becoming an incredible source of deadlocks and RBAR on steroids. They deserve some very high velocity pork. 🙂

True, and I feel sorry for the OP more than anything. But then the logical first reply would have been 'more info please', not something so vague as to be a waste of space.
