I just realised I don't have an April Fools day blog post planned. π
So start a completely serious post with, "I had this idea for an April Fools post ..." Leave everyone wondering where the joke is. Inverted "gotcha".

Couldn't resist....AHHHHHHH!!!!! You beat me of a couple of seconds!!!
That's cause I cheated. Hit quote and post, then went back and added something meaningful. π
You know, that seems to me to be a form of RBAR. I wouldn't have thought I'd see you engaging in looping practices, Gail. π
Why not? If it's the most efficient and serves the required purpose.

Now that's just evil! (And a perfect joke in and of itself).

An app I wrote for a prior employer used to tell people their shoes were untied at random intervals throughout the day on 1st April or the nearest workday. (Also would sing Happy Birthday to them when they first logged in on their birthday. And the splash page while the app was loading initial data would ask them what the heck they were doing at work if they signed in between midnight and 4 AM. What can I say? I like Easter Eggs.)
The best part was, I would actually catch people looking down at their feet, sometimes several times, because of a pop-up error message about their shoes being untied. One person fell for three times in one day, while wearing sandles.

I just popped along to the Guiness World Records website to see if we could lodge The Thread under a Longest Web Thread category or similar. There doesn't appear to be a category for that (yet) but neither was the concept on of their "barred" categories either.Anyone else think this is an idea worth pursuing?
Steve.
Nice idea. Unfortunately, we are a bit behind:

Totally different topic: can anybody help with this?

I'm stuck and I can't think of a set-based solution, but I would like to see how you would solve it.

Honestly, The Thread has nothing compared to threads I've seen on game forums whenever some patch "nerfs" a popular class or whatever. SSC can't compete with some WoW forums in any quantitative metric. A lot more passion in those (mostly completely idiotic passion, but passion nonetheless), which leads to tens of thousands of posts in a single day sometimes.

I used to have a TSR program I'd load on the sales department computers (back in the days when DOS was still a standard O/S) that would replace certain interrupt 13 errors with "Operator error: please replace operator". It also borrowed a nice little piece of code (that I, sadly, did not think of first, but fell in love with) that made the floppy disk drive sound like it the spin cycle of a washing machine and would, occasionally, insist that it had to dry out a wet floppy on insert.
Why yes, I worked with a collection of practical jokers, why do you ask? π

I had a colleague in the good old Windows NT 3.1 days who wrote a little service that he installed on other peoples' machines which every now and again would pop up an image of the Blue Screen of Death. You should have heard the guys swearing at "this crap operating system" and then rebooting their machines by just swithcing them off :w00t:

Need an app that adds an "unused" folder to your system, takes a screen shot of the desktop, moves all icons to the unused folder, and replaces the background with the screen shot just taken.
Why doesn't anything work when I click on it?

I did that once (windows 95). Fun.
Then someone tried to do it to me. However my machine was running an alternate windows shell (not explorer) and they couldn't find paint, let alone control panel. :hehe:

What do you think of 3E and 4E or are you still playing with the original hardcovers? Or with the original booklets?! Do you ever run other systems?
