Sorry to plug my own thread, but does anyone have table partitioning experience that could shed light on odd behavior?
Thread: $PARTITION function wrong after switch?
This isn't production (just research) so it isn't critical at all, but I can't figure out why it doesn't work as I expected. I left the thread out there alone for a week, no bites. 🙁
Thanks,
Chad

An interview isn't just the employer deciding on an employee. The employee is also judging the employer. I think many people fail to realize this even during the interviewI recently did an in-person interview, and when I entered the room the first comment was "this is the guy that interviewed us during the phone interview as hard as we interviewed him". My reply was that I have to ensure that I'll like the company, the people, and the work, or else it's a waste of time for all of us.
Now that's the way to be remembered. Did you actually get the job?
Yes. Just started it on 1/31.

Hey, while I've got you guys here, when I was off the network, the Virtual Box and the laptop stopped communicating. I'm sure I've got a configuration wrong. Anyone point me in the right direction?I'm sure someone has answered by now, but just in case: you probably have one (or both) set up with dynamically acquired IP addresses
Ah, both.... hmmm... So the virtual should have a hard-coded ip address?
Depends how the connection is set up, and whether the box updates the dns when it acquires a different address.
Assuming the laptop uses DNS to find the virtual server, and that when the virtual server acquires a new address it sucessfully updates the DNS server that the laptop uses, there should be no problem with dynamic addresses (unless you have you dns client cache lifetime set too high on the laptop, in which flushing that cache may solve your problem).
edit: of course you may not want to given the virtual server permission to update the DNS server; in that case you need to give it a fixed address (and tell the DHCP server that it can't issue that address to anyone).
But, if you're off the network, then there isn't a DNS to update.
I think I have mine set up to use NAT - I know that it will allow the VM to connect to the sql on the host; not sure about the other way around though. Grant, do you need me to test this out tonight?
(And, in retrospect, the one VM I use to connect to the host sql is a VMWare, not VirtualBox. Though I've started using VirtualBox, and can test it if you want me to.)

Are any Threadizens going to SQL Saturday #69 (Philadelphia) on March 5? I just read the email where my presentation has been selected to be presented! :w00t::w00t::w00t:I'd love to meet any of you'll that are there!
Yes, I'll be there barring any unforeseen circumstances... I keep waiting for them to post the final schedule so I can figure out who's sessions I'll be able to fit in. Yours is one I was looking forward to attending.
-Luke.
Cool, I'll be looking forward to meeting you there!
FYI, it sounds like February 18th is when the final selection/schedule will be made. See the next-to-last paragraph here

Lordy, that's still going on?Yes, and now as a result of nadabadan's reply to Brandie our favourite Saint is feeding the troll. Will this wear him down tactic work, or will we see yet another typical nadabadanogram in reply to Lynn? Your guess is as good as mine, I suppose (as long as your guess is the latter not the former).
I've actually got a civil discussion going with nadabadan via private messages. He's as surprised by our reactions to his comments as we are to his. I think it'll sort out.
I was wrong. He's just getting more insulting and irrational.

Nah. When I'm auditing people (Dianetics), I get to deal with all kinds of irrationality, and a lot of the more horrific emotional responses people can go through. So I'm used to being patient with that kind of thing, because by the end, they're through that and laughing at their own reactions. Nothing saintly about it, just application of a set of standardized techniques that get predictable results.
This kind of thing is a bit more frustrating in an online forum, because I can't use the tools I'm used to employing in-person. Like trying to tune a query without SSMS.
I've grown accustomed to getting people over things like childhood trauma, losses of parents/spouses/children/pets, obsessions, compulsions, irrational fears, et al, and it's a bit frustrating that I can only help a few, not everyone who could benefit from it.
(On the cool side, one of the people I'm working with ran out a very painful eye injury from when he was very young, and now he doesn't need glasses any more! The feeling when I get to do things like that more than makes up for a thread like that one. Boy was his optometrist surprised, though! That was a few months ago, and I'm still jazzed about it.)

I'm assuming negotiations fell through, given your last post on the other thread?
EDIT: Nevermind. I didn't see this page on The Thread when I posted the above.

Yikes, sorry to hear Gail. What was that conversation about 9000km last time? 🙂
Never stop learning, even if it hurts. Ego bruises are practically mandatory as you learn unless you've never risked enough to make a mistake.

9000 km North by North West. Maybe I should stop over on way back from Summit and do some investigations.

I think you just have to say Yes I want to move and I am sure someone will come and knock on your door and ask when you can join... 🙂

Yeah, I agree with Roy on this one. In fact, any of us employed by a UK company are quaking in our boots about now.
