Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • newdb (2/10/2011)

Yes I agree that some of the question posted - you can get the answer from BOL or from other posts, but on the other hand I can understand the poster's side.

I am an accidental DBA. I was and still working with UNIX admin and was thrown into the SQL world. Everything I know of SQL, I'd said about 10%, are from talking to the former DBA, through this site, MS and a lot of other SQL-ish sites. I join the local SQL group, sign up for a lot of free webminar, try to read at least one blog a day about SQL (DMV/INDEX/SSRS/SSIS) but I got to admit - it's too much info and not enough time to sit down and fine tune and/or apply what I'd read/learn etc....

So please be patient with us, because sometime when you got managers and/or users in front of you and the phone ringing consistently with different issues on different servers at the same time you just don't have time to think clearly except to look to expert advise via the post for now to put out the fire and then find time to learn once the fire was put out and the dust had settle.

Give us a chance, we'll be there someday....and I hope one day I can repay my debt to the SQL society by answering someone's post.

    Welcome aboard!

The subject of this thread has changed a bit over time, but trust us, we're pretty easy on new people. The original lament was people who don't even try. Doesn't apply in your case, quite obviously.

Thanks Chris (and all others) for well wishes, Its an uncertain market in uncertain financial times, hopefully ive done enough leg work over the past few years to build myself as a mini-brand to stand out from the crowd.

Is the SSC party at sqlbits going to be just me again, or is anyone else going ?

good luck, Dave, and it will likely just be a few of you at Bits. I committed to Dallas SQL Saturday right around that time, and am likely headed your way in late Apr/early May, so two trips in a month doesn't sound so exciting.

  • Wow, that was fun. Stressful as hell (couldn't get the conference call to work initially), but great fun.

Going to be on a high for a few hours at least. Should probably use it to get stuff done.

Sort of the Voice of Authority -- do what I say because I KNOW what I am talking about.

Good presentation. Much of it was review but picked up a few new things here and there (like the Sev 10 error for 825). Also loved the strategies for troubleshooting corruption, including a focus on the correct order of activity.

Congratulations. I basically handed in my notice a couple of weeks ago, but I'm giving like 16-20 weeks notice, not required by law though, just letting them know so they can plan and I can look without feeling guilty.

My move will likely be up, although I have nothing lined up at this point.

Good luck Jack, Im sure you'll get exactly what you are after. The time will fly by , im sure you've got a lot on your plate already with SQLRally just round the corner too.

    Steve ,

maybe have a word with a few of the UK MVP's at the summit, see if a London user group could be arranged for when you are around. Just a suggestion, if youve got the time would be great.

Ask how long that action will take for your SAP system .... over here that's a whole other scale being used .. ( more like a matter of days :hehe: )

So now I only have to perform PIT-restores the next day and it's ok.

No more nightly wait times for me for these copy actions :w00t:
