I'm hoping much the same thing... π
To put things in context, my desktop (which I'll be using for this) blue screened this morning then, on reboot failed POST repeatedly.
Am hoping it's a once-off, or easy to repair. Will see if it boots this evening.

I look forward to his stating that when there's a problem with the virtualization. : -)

It's not so bad. He's obviously academic, and he's upset by me being a practical realist. The ad hominem attacks on me are a bit weak, and nothing too noteworthy.
It's a pretty standard mindset and handling. Fits right into the behavior-prediction algorithms I was writing about last week. There are two possible ways he'll respond to my replies to him. I'm curious as to which he'll do (assuming he's still paying attention to that thread).

Several people implied an important point in that thread that I think is too often glossed over. I didn't say anything about it there because I didn't want to "pile on". An interview isn't just the employer deciding on an employee. The employee is also judging the employer. I think many people fail to realize this even during the interview, so grateful are they to have the possibility of a job. People end up in untenable positions because they ignore this part of the process.
When I'm in an interview, if it is clear from the questions that they aren't useful questions or that the interviewer doesn't understand the material and is unwilling to listen to any but stock answers, I don't take the job. Sure, not everyone has that luxury or confidence, but it still needs to be taken into consideration during the interview process.

Probably a sideways move , nothing set up yet. Just got to get through my 12Week  notice period. Yes 12 Weeks , European labour laws work both ways.

Congratulations. I basically handed in my notice a couple of weeks ago, but I'm giving like 16-20 weeks notice, not required by law though, just letting them know so they can plan and I can look without feeling guilty.
My move will likely be up, although I have nothing lined up at this point.

Good luck. 12weeks may be a bit tough to get through though when considering it doesn't sound like you want to be there anymore.

Might be a bit prideful of me but he's kinda disappeared since I shutdown his comments about computer science theory and me referencing 'made up things'. Well, here's hoping. I know where you're coming from Gus but if he's a full blown acadamian, he's bad at that, too.

True Stefan. I wish more employers also saw it this way instead of feeling godly for having a peanut to hand to a starving crowd.
And on a topic switch:
Congratz Dave and Jack. I personally usually aim for 4-6 weeks. 2 weeks to interview to get a replacement and 2-4 weeks to do the handoff. Of course, it's not always feasible for both sides to do that...

Blech!Sorry guys, I'm not going into that one. It smacks of "Someone is wrong on the internet" I'm sure I can spend my time elsewhere more productively.
Probably sensible.
It's somewhat amusing though: he's now got Gus accusing hime of being an academic because he (a) indulges in ad hominem attacks and (b) [in Gus's view] he thinks methodology is more important that results. That could develop into something interesting, we could have a nice little flame war between those of us who have retained academic connections throughout our career (because we know that a far greater proportion of people in industry believe in methodology over results than in academia, so the academics will generally have a better idea of which methods actually work and deliver results) and those who have effectively ditched all contact with academia because at some point in their career they came across an academic idiot and immediately [un]reasoned from the particular to the general. But a request for help is the wrong topic in the wrong forum to play that sort of game (although nadabadan brought me close - smoke from ears effect - and Gus tempted me terribly - wouldn't this be fun effect).
Actually I don't believe the guy can be an academic (or if he is one, he won't last long). Almost every academic in the world knows the value of asking people how to do something stupid, that the response tells you a lot about how much they know and how their minds work. No academic computer scientist would ever have written his last response to Craig. No academic with a pedantic methodology-oriented view of the world would have talked about a case "statement" in a language which has case expressions but no case statements.
