Not sure why Jeff or Ron weren't at the Sunday morning run, but I'm sure they'll be at the next one :-P:hehe:

Oh, I have to know. Were you out running in the snow while wearing your kilts?

Not quite. A little cold for kilts.

Threadizens, What are you currently using to run virtual servers on your desktops/laptops?

    VirtualBox. Simply GREAT.

Threadizens, What are you currently using to run virtual servers on your desktops/laptops?

VirtualPC and VirtualBox. Loath as I am to admit it, the Oracle product is better.

Just because they bought it! 😛

It was developed by Sun, years before Oracle arrived.

  • I have never set up a virtual machine for myself before, so I'm going to ask a really stupid question that I think I already know the answer for.

If I were to do this, I would need to make sure I have enough HD space for the virtual OS (and programs) and additional RAM, correct?

So if I had 2 copies of the same OS, would I "double" my RAM, 1/2 for the original OS and 1/2 for the virtual? Or how does that work?

You allocate RAM to the virtual PC, and the host OS treats it as just another application that's using RAM. So, if you want to run a VM with 16 Gig, you better make sure your host OS has enough beyond that to operate, and to run any other apps/services that it will be running, so probably a minimum of about 20 Gig actual RAM on the machine.

  • Does the site have a FAQ for newbies?

Someone just posted a "hello, I'm new here" post to the end of someone else's thread. It's not a bad post, so I don't want to report it, but I'd love to point the poster to a FAQ (if there is one) about what gets posted where.
