Even when he does come up with a pearl of wisdom worth remembering, it's always accompanied by some really arrogant, condescending rhetoric that's just not necessary.Which is why I refuse to acknowledge or even pay attention to him, regardless of any valid points he may have.
Just because of his attitude, not only will I never recommend his books, I'm going to tell people to steer clear of them.
I agree ignoring his posts is one way to deal with his online personality.
But to tell people not to read his books just because of the way he represent himself on the web is just plain wrong, I think.
If there are valid arguments based on the content of a book, that would be a different story. But in order to do so, there need to be a few people actually reading the books, admitting they did, and start a discussion about specific sections.
I started to comment on his posts using "rumour says he has quite some knowledge about SQL". Did lead to a ring-knocking reply at least once though... π
Btw, that would be my statement regarding any of his books, too. If I cannot judge or at least predict the value of a book I shouldn't vote for or against it either.

or we could follow Europe and Japan and let people operate vending machines with their phones.Do what with their phone now? We should definitely do that.
There's a number on the vending machine and you call it with your phone and can charge your purchase that way. I believe the number is like the shorter texting numbers you hear given out on tv or radio.
Bah that seems like way too much trouble. I've actually been impressed with the ones that will take a credit card. It seems to work well, though I have concerns about the ability to mine that data given a large enough sample, as well as certain man in the middle type attacks on the networks (wired or wireless) used to communicate with the card processing center.
It's hard to hack a quarter. π I'd much rather continue to use change or dollar bills for vending machines. I also dislike the idea that Visa get's 4% (usually) of the transaction. Everyone pitches a fit if State or Federal governments ask for a 4% handling fee (ie, tax) but no one says a thing about Visa, MC, or any of the other cards doing it because it's generally not know and it's always well hidden. The only place they don't seem to hide it is at the gas pump where they take 10 cents off the price of a gallon for cash.
So many people whine about how heavy dollar coins are, they mist be nigh crippled by the quarters they carry around. That's one reason I'd like to see them go to hard, durable plastic. I don't like Visa getting a cut there either, they need some real competition.

If they see a penny on the ground, they leave it there.
Maybe other folks will leave it, but I'll stop and pick it up. I've got a 5 gallon plastic water bottle that's about a 3rd full from that. I haven't counted them yet, but there's a fair amount of money there.
I do the same thing. Periodically cash it in. Had $80 in it last time.
Luckily those people at the bank have machines nowadays that can count pennies fairly easy. (unless they clog up of course).
It must have been a real pain counting all the nickels 40 years ago...
I stopped doing this when banks stopped accepting coins. Now they give you a nice set of papers and you have to prepare the coins rolled in 50 pieces sets. In other words, they have the machines, but they make you count by hand.

If so many of you dislike a certain poster so much then why do you have to keep on talking about him?
Frustration and the need to express it before exploding in an inappropriate manner.
Just my guess on this matter.

Me too it is kind of like listening to the traffic report on the radio to know where the car crashes are.

A fairly cool (IMO) change ,superseding old articles, could be happening to SSC in the future.
Comments ??

It is like watching a horror movie. You don't want to look, but you catch yourself watching between your fingers π

I think it is a great suggestion.
But as mentioned in the topic, the "old way" of doing things can still be valid in older versions, so it is not an easy exercise to make.

Any of the Threadizens interested in a performance tuning project in the Los Angeles area? Drop me a PM.I don't suppose there's a chance of doing it remotely, is there?
I think it'll need to include some coaching too...
I can't be more specific in public other than "I think the issue is covered."
I tried to send you a PM but your folder seems to be flooded.
But obviously, you're not the only one (@Jason: strong hint!!)

I was getting a bazillion PM's asking for private help. I got tired of replying "Please post it on the forum" so I just let my PM fill up. You can always email me in the strictest of confidence.
