If they see a penny on the ground, they leave it there.
Maybe other folks will leave it, but I'll stop and pick it up. I've got a 5 gallon plastic water bottle that's about a 3rd full from that. I haven't counted them yet, but there's a fair amount of money there.

This place rocks... I ask for help and I get tons of help. This is the second time I asked for help here and both the times I was pointed to the right direction. 🙂I have been noticing that the twitter #sqlhelp tag is over rated. SSC rocks... !!!!!
Very cool, Roy. I think the same thing. I don't ask for help much but when I do, I get some pretty awesome answers usually in less than a day.

Any of the Threadizens interested in a performance tuning project in the Los Angeles area? Drop me a PM.
I don't suppose there's a chance of doing it remotely, is there?

or we could follow Europe and Japan and let people operate vending machines with their phones.Do what with their phone now? We should definitely do that.
There's a number on the vending machine and you call it with your phone and can charge your purchase that way. I believe the number is like the shorter texting numbers you hear given out on tv or radio.
Bah that seems like way too much trouble. I've actually been impressed with the ones that will take a credit card. It seems to work well, though I have concerns about the ability to mine that data given a large enough sample, as well as certain man in the middle type attacks on the networks (wired or wireless) used to communicate with the card processing center.
It's hard to hack a quarter. 😀 I'd much rather continue to use change or dollar bills for vending machines. I also dislike the idea that Visa get's 4% (usually) of the transaction. Everyone pitches a fit if State or Federal governments ask for a 4% handling fee (ie, tax) but no one says a thing about Visa, MC, or any of the other cards doing it because it's generally not know and it's always well hidden. The only place they don't seem to hide it is at the gas pump where they take 10 cents off the price of a gallon for cash.

Is the INTO just there to make it compatible with ANSI standards?
They threw it in so Celko would be happy.

Even when he does come up with a pearl of wisdom worth remembering, it's always accompanied by some really arrogant, condescending rhetoric that's just not necessary.
Which is why I refuse to acknowledge or even pay attention to him, regardless of any valid points he may have.
Just because of his attitude, not only will I never recommend his books, I'm going to tell people to steer clear of them.

I do the same thing. Periodically cash it in. Had $80 in it last time.

Well, whenever I encounter one of his posts, I usually just scroll past the arrogant ranting at the top (which almost looks like biolerplate text) to see if there isn't indeed a little pearl hiding there (one never knows) and totally ignore the book list.

Luckily those people at the bank have machines nowadays that can count pennies fairly easy. (unless they clog up of course).
It must have been a real pain counting all the nickels 40 years ago...

They'd do it by weight for any significant amount of money. X nickels weighs Y ounces, so if you can be sure they're all nickels, you can "count" them accurately in a minute or less on a decent scale, even for hundreds of them. They also have fixed diameter and thickness, so another mass-counting technique is to use a funnel to run into a tube, and a shaker to make them lie flat in it.
And yes, that's an overdose on trivia. As usual.
