Hey guys. Blogging/articles and the like are relatively new to me, so I'd like your educated opinions on how I should look at this:http://balapalani.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
It's roughly a copy/paste of the second half of my (1) article. Now, I'm torn. On the one side I would love to see those definitions more clearly defined throughout the industry. At the same time, g'damn. A straight up copy/paste? Really? He does link back to here at SSC, however.
So, I'll throw up my newbie flag here and ask for some advice.
From my point of view, it's not plagiarism. It starts with "Getting Started in SQL Server By Craig Farrell, 2010/12/09" followed by a link to the original article. I guess that's about as much as you can ask for in terms of referencing the original source....
This isn't a POV issue, Lutz. It is, by every legal definition of the term, pure and simple copyright violation. It doesn't matter that he linked to the original source. It doesn't matter that he accredited Craig with the article. It doesn't matter that he states he copy & pasted. What matters that he didn't have permission to copy that information into his own blog.
Plain and simple.

Today is my last working day for this year. There fore I want to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year, 2011.On another note, I have been noticing for quite some time that the patience level of the forum regulars has gone down couple of notches. There are quite a few snappy comments even for a smallest mistake from the poster who is asking for help. Sometimes when I read the threads I feel a bit shocked. This was not how it was when I first joined SSC. Something is not quite right here. I think we should examine ourselves before we make SSC into a place where the Posters feel not welcome. Maybe we could all tone down our responses.
I know that this might make some people unhappy... But thats how I feel.
Agreed... and some of the canned posts being used on newbies sound pretty bad, as well.

I agree with Grant... land on him like a ton of bricks. First step is to hit the "Report Abuse" button on that page. Remind people that they may provide links but they cannot simply copy your copyrighted article even if they do give you the credit for the article.

Since I wasn't really sure (= being able to reference some laws that would apply), I marked it as my POV. π
After all it seems like I was right in terms of no plagiarism. But plain wrong regarding the copyright issue. So, in total, I failed. :ermm:
I'm not sure though if that person even think he's violating a law. There are some regions where the meaning of word "copyright" (or it's translation) is almost unknown. And there's no legal enforcement to change it. Sad.

Thank you, Jon! It would have been a hill of crap without the help of Gus, Jeff and Paul (in strict chronological order).

Land on him... both feet. And if that doesn't work, tweet about him and let the Swarm devour him.
Honestly, I'd start by mailing Steve and let him get RedGate's legal dept on it. No point in doing the work yourself.

Actually, Craig, Gail's idea is a good one. Especially since he did infringe on your contract with SSC.
It's a toss up whether or not you should email him a polite note asking him to remove the post before you send the dogs after him. If this is something he does all the time, it would be worth it to pound him. But if this is a one time thing that he wasn't thinking about, he might appreciate the chance to rectify the situation before legal action is taken.
Or before the Twit Swarm devours him.

I just noticed I hit 10k "points" on SSC today. Good way to end the year, as it were.
