What are your preferences for VM machines - VMWare or VirtualPC?I've been using VMWare for years (and am happy with it), but to install a 64-bit Windows 7 and Denali, I'll need to upgrade (again) at $100.
So, what say you?
So, with (from the people that responded) 1 person using VMWare, 2 using Virtual PC, and 3 using VirtualBox, I've decided to try VirtualBox. So far, it's looking pretty good. I easily installed Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm doing all the upgrades right now (58!). Still have to install AV and Firewall, then finally Denali, but so far everything is looking good! Let me know if you want to know more...
So I guess my Hyper V fell into the Itanium category?
But I guess not everyone just has a server OS available.
W2008 does make a great client OS - some of the eye candy is missing, but I can do without that.
Also note that with W7 (and W2008 R2) you can boot directly to a .vhd.
Which could have some advantages and speed up the environment.
And since Denali is Beta, with a timebomb, running it on a trial version of W2008 R2 might make sense.
Just something to think about.

Greg - Sorry, but somehow I missed your post. And with what you just mentioned, I see that I omitted a key piece of information - this is running on my laptop, not a work server. (I kinda implied it with installing win7, but I wasn't specific about it.)
I have to say... I was impressed with the Win7 install on VirtualBox. It went VERY SMOOTHLY! And as soon as I have everything installed that I want on that, I'll make a copy and start installing Denali.
I kind of thought that, and even with laptops, I know a number of those running a server OS on them.
The boot from .vhd - you could use W2008 R2 as a dual boot, create a Hyper V of W2008 R2 on it, and then copy that out to put into the boot menu. That gets rid of some of the overhead.
The drawback is if you need something on the base OS that is not in the secondary environments, since you would only be running 1 OS at a time.

nah - that isn't bad. I think there are many people that would have or have posted similar statements in their replies.

Yeah, I really liked how the OP pointed out that all Celko's assumptions were wrong. He seems to think everyone that posts here started programming back in the 80s with his obsession with COBOL and the like.

BWWWWAAAAA-HAAAAA-HAAA!!! It seems the OP's code actually has the ultimate answer to that particular problem built into it...

Congrats Paul! And I have to agree with Kendra - whenever you have a new blog post, I'm about to learn something (maybe unlearning along the way!)
