I have to wonder if this thread is encouraging people to respond more harshly to articles, posts, etc. Certain we've seen an uptick amongst ourselves of bashing other posters. But today I see this in response to one of Jeff's articles.Mike McIver (12/7/2010)
Really . . . I don't know where to start. <CommentCutting> This article is an example of how poor coding propagates...We know the old saying. There's a critic in every crowd. Several of us have already responded to this post, but I wonder how many of us would have answered the way we did if that second comment weren't inserted into the respondent's reply.
Are we propagating bad internet / forum behavior? This thread can be seen by anyone, remember. Even those who don't have an SSC login.
I have been a little concerned about this, trying to keep an eye on it. There is a little "piling on" at times, and I'm not sure if it's good or bad. On one hand I like to see people supporting others, or emphasizing that more information is needed. Easy for an OP to dismiss one person. However when it becomes 4 or 5 people, I think it can be a little intimidating.
I've noticed the same thing, and have been working to avoid it.
Same here. It's even a part of my limiting the number of posts I make to The Thread.
If someone posts something - anything apart from humour - which is false, it should be pointed out and a correction posted. We're all free to participate at either end of the stick. However, some of the cr@p in Jeffs discussion is bordering on deliberate baiting. He made the shortcomings of ISNUMERIC very clear and offered an alternative, pointing out that it won't be viable in every case but could be used as the basis of a viable solution. That's been ignored. Jeff's coped well with this of course, having run the discussion gauntlet many times before, but it won't be quite so easy for first-time article writers.

Really . . . I don't know where to start. <CommentCutting> This article is an example of how poor coding propagates...I've seen that sort of attack on Jeff's articles quite often; there are those, unfortunately, who don't believe in writing whatever works efficiently with checks to make sure you know (before it causes any problems) if it stops working. A pity, but we have to live with them. What you quote is fairly mild compared to some of the nonsense that we've seen before. (Incidentally, a URL would be useful to save messing around with google - especially as google returns no results for what you quote).
Tom, I included the link in the words "This article". But the quote code makes the bold hard to see, I guess.

Given Steve's editorial yesterday (or sometime...) on the voting machine presentation from TED talks, I thought this Joy of Tech comic this morning very appropriate and funny.

Nonsense. They outsource to Hollywood.
That wouldn't be "out"-sourcing, now would it?

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that one too. I wonder if I can stream it over my phone so I can listen while driving home? May have to try.

So, if a DBA goes crazy in his car, does he need an Autopshrink?

I think this one is a case of mis-representation for the sake of advertising a presentation. "Best Practices" are not situations where you apply "It Depends" to outliers in the world of SQL databases. The fact that something CAN be done IF you need it as a LAST RESORT on an OUTDATED system is hardly a "Best Practice".
Oh well. He's a decent presenter, at least.
*Edit - ok, his comment about table variables made me change my mind. Vague statements about "table variables are almost always better than temp tables" with no testing, in light of all the stuff that's gone on already with testing, swing and a miss.
