You know there's a problem when...

In the last 2 weeks there have been three resignations at current client:

The senior developer (leaving only 2 permanent developers)

    The Chief Enterprise Architect

    The CIO

No, the time you know there's trouble is when you get a text when, while you are a in a distant continent a few thousand miles from base and in the middle of difficult discussions with a partner company, you get a text out of the blue from your CEO saying "goodbye, the board sacked me", and then the marketing director (who is discussing joint marketing plans with the same partner, and has received a similar text) asks you to explain the situation to the partner and their staff involved in the collaboration because he hasn't a clue what's going on and is sufficiently deluded to think that you will have been briefed. Losing a CIO in one's own company is comparatively trivial (compared to losing a CEO) and may be beneficial; losing a CIO in a client company - well, it happens and is usually good news (unfortunately it doesn't happen often enough); I have rarely met a CIO who could find his feet without the developers explaining to him where his legs were, and most couldn't find them even then because they regarded developers as an unfortunate nuisance.

The company I worked for last year, we (the managers and employees) found out that the whole board of directors, including the CEO, had resigned, by reading it the local newspaper the following weekend. Even the GM didn't know it had happened till he read about it. Some of the major shareholders didn't even know yet.

We also later found out that they had sold themselves the assets from the company that they considered viable. Again, by reading about it in the news.

For some strange reason, that Monday had a lot of worried-looking managers, and a lot of people packing updating resumes....

I sense the fire under the pressure cooker might get bigger.

The last 2 - seems like you have a car with no steering wheel.

    Greg E

No - the first two may be a problem, but the last one probably means that the monkey is no longer playing with the steering wheel.

In this case the CIO was doing a fairly decent job of fixing all the historical problems with the IT department (of which there were many). Left because the executives above (CFO mostly) was making it impossible to do the job. (CIO can't even approve a $3000 hardware purchase without the CFO's approval, and the CFO always says no)

I worked at a place a few years ago that hired a new CIO who hired me. 6 mo later they fired him because he wanted to change things and spend some money. They were aghast that he couldn't fix all their problems without changing anything.

Wow, that should open the individuals up to lawsuits.

... I agree. I like WordPress well enough and there are so many tools and plugins you'll likely find answers there for whatever you want to do. I haven't had time to explore many of them myself yet. I've just gotten to making a custom header image for one of the blogs. Between the Holiday and illness (mild), I've let the blogging slip. I need to get back to it.

What I don't like about WordPress is what I found out this morning. My Windows hosting plan does not support WordPress. I guess I need to look at a different hosting plan.

I had a similar problem. I ended up switching to Arvixe.com. As I haven't put up a main page on my site yet, it has the links to their site Thoughtstream.com. I'm sending you there because I'm lazy and know I can spell that right. : -)

EDIT: I apparently can't spell the URL tags correctly though...

Hey Stefan, your website looks like mine!!! 😀

I'm looking for more than just WordPress and I'd like to be able to do some ASP.Net stuff. I don't need the ASP.Net, so I may just switch over to Linux hosting with the same company. I can always switch later.

  • Hey Threadizens, are there any developers out there who can give me a good recommendation for non-SQL (specifically, ASP.NET MVC2) questions?

Ah, the Arvixe package I have runs PHP under Windows so I can host WordPress blogs and have the rest of the site as ASP.Net. And it is really cheap too! I haven't had many problems there yet, but the support has been good so far. I need to talk to them this weekend about why I'm not getting notifications about when I get comments on the blogs.

The main page for my site isn't up yet, but I am hosting 8 WordPress blogs on there as subdomains. I'm allowed unlimited subdomains, so that's another nice feature.

Right now I'm leaning towards keeping my cheap $3.99/month Windows plan and just addin a cheap Linux plan. I'll probably go for a slight more expensive plan since I volunteered to help host someone's website. All they need right now is WordPress.

Sure, makes sense. I had been paying $10/month and was all excited about dropping to $5/month with all the features I needed. Adding in a cheap Linux plan could be a good move especially since it'd avoid the annoyance of moving your site to a new provider.

  • Stefan, by more expensive, I meant $6.99 or $9.99.

    That's still pretty cheap.

Yep! I'm pretty happy with it.

Good luck with your WordPress implementation. I'm sure you'll have few problems. Good to know that if you run into any, there's a bunch of people here that might be able to help. : -)

Can anyone point me to a good example of an abstract that was submitted for PASS? A weblink or something?

I want to apply as a speaker for SQL Rally and I'm sure it's different from the stuff I've written up for SQL Saturdays. Of course, as soon as I can get the Rally site to recognize my PASS site login as being a valid account, maybe I can log in and see the Speaker's Contract page. @sigh.

    Sorry you are having issues.

Honestly the abstracts aren't that much different than SQLSaturday. To me the key things are being clear as to what you will present and what the attendee will be able to take back to the office.

If you go to the speaker resource page, http://www.sqlpass.org/Community/SpeakerResource.aspx, there are some sample abstracts you can look at under the Tips for speakers page.

  • Hi guys, could we get some comments on the today's QOTD please?

    Need some more senior input.
