Well, I took a major tech break over my Thanksgiving holiday. The only time my computer was on since I left work last Wednesday was Thursday afternoon when we were Skypeing with Nannie in New England.

    Good for you.

I hope leaving work at work is good for your health.

Maybe they want to add some new enhancements.

Nope. No new enhancements. I think that a Dec go-live interferes with vacation plans

Exactly! I regularly have to remind our local project managers, "Uhm, do you really think trying to release on December 23rd is a good idea? Will you be available if there's an outage on the 24th?" Same thing with almost any other holiday too, but it's especially surprising at Yule.

In this case is was supposed to be 1st December. I would certainly have been available if there had been a problem.

At the bank we used to have a full system freeze (NOTHING changed) from 16 December through to the 2nd week of January.

We had kind of policy since 1996, when I was working for a rather little banking company, that positioned their IT as critical for their business.

Freezing as soon as 2-nd weekend of December until after last weekend of January.

My current company only had that kind of policy during 99-2K and euro switch time frame.

  • Back after a week gone, or most of a week. Somewhat refreshed, and ready to work.

  • FWIW, to some extent I think that IT is the group that should work on holidays, and do deployments since this is downtime for many businesses. Of course I think support/ development should be there, or on call with the production people to ensure things can get deployed.

Welcome back. We had the maid service clean up after the parties. So if anything is out of whack... it's their fault. 😛

Although some deployments are better to wait until after financial close of the year.

Might be the worst possible time to be scrambling.

Heard a commercial on the radio this morning for a maid service to clean your house. The hourly cost was the same as my gross pay.

Something's not right with that picture!!!!!

I wouldn't go so far as to say Holidays. Especially not in a case where there is an e-commerce presence. Holidays are not the time to have something go wrong and maybe push some of those customers to other purchasing sources.

On the flip-side, I see your point and think that weekends are the times for doing deployments. Less impact to the business and make sure we have people to support the deployment.

Absolutely. I think comp time goes a long way to keeping morale high and people happy. I would even suggest that the employee can choose between comp-time and monetary compensation. I think that may be more attractive in the long run to more people.

"Sir, we're screwed, the contractor was right!"

"Well, under all that's holy don't let THEM know that, peon!"

"Of course sir, we've made it a 'vague managemental decision'."

"Good peon. Back to the pits."

Wacky thing is, development's complete, testing is complete. Everything's ready, now they want to sit and do nothing for a month.

  • For e-comm, holidays don't make sense, and maybe not weekends. My point is more that the downtime is the time to do deployments, though often that doesn't match up with traditional work hours.

    My previous jobs have had:

    1. Wed night deployments, every week.

    2. Friday night deployments, once a month. Actually twice. Once for test systems, once for prod.

    3. Sat night, 11pm to 5am Sun, once a quarter.
