Are the posted questions getting worse?

Craig - I thought about posting this over "there", but decided to keep this to us threadizens.

    http://blogs.lessthandot.com/index.php/DataMgmt/DataDesign/iso-11179-naming-conventions

(Just gotta love how it starts out by talking about you-know-who!)

Ah, that wasn't exactly my point but thanks for the link. I had wondered where the official version hung out at. metadata-standards.org, 'eh? I don't think I'll link it... except maybe under the tag "The Enemy"? 😛

Alright, so the ISO's not that bad, I just want to beat the Grinch over the head with the entire library at once sometimes. It's a nice to have, but really... who the hell cares other than the Engine developers?

I know I have one client that I write ETL processes for. Some of the data needs to follow ISO standards - country codes, currency codes, etc. I have to say that it would be nice if we had designed this into the system, instead of needing to convert for the ETL process.

Perhaps a better link for any ISO standard is www.iso.org. One thing to note is: it cost to download them. It's great that these standards exist, but most smaller companies aren't going to pay for them. If they want people to use them, make them free. Wonder how Joe would respond to this argument?

Wayne, can you send me a copy after you finish downloading them? 😀 (kidding)

I've been there and noticed that. Where they really want you to go from there is your local retailer (ANSI for USA), which can be found here:http://webstore.ansi.org/SdoInfo.aspx?sdoid=39&source=iso_member_body

Type in 11179 in the search box and it'll list the sections.

It's $30, per section, with six sections.

I can't get the "I accept" button on the metadata-standards site to work properly.

So, basically, pay $180, each person, to make dear ol' Joe happy. Um... the politest I'll phrase that is "I don't think so, hoss." My actual thought process involved knee pads.

Edit: Worse than I originally thought, the revised versions are $100+ each section. So, between $600-900 for a full copy. Definately requiring knee pads. I want my money's worth.

Hmm, guess we'll start asking Joe to pay for it for everyone. Speaking of Joe... he's asking for help at http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1026157-391-1.aspx

Don't have a good answer for that. My initial response would be go take some math classes at the local U.

Better yet, somebody could post a bunch of links to the ANSI standards.

Alvin - how about posting over there something like "Isn't there an ISO standard for that? Why aren't you using it?"

  • I sometimes feel like reporting his posts as "plain advert covered by some rather unhelpful or unrelated advice"...

But I think all it would generate would be some additional work for Steve to look at the post, see who posted it, make his judgement and eventually talk to "Mr. C.". Again.

So, I usually decide not to report it in order to reduce the "non-value-adding" stuff Steve has to deal with...

  • All this Joe talk has me thinking Whack A Mole....

    Alvin -

I seem to also recall some steakhouse where you could get an insanely large piece of meat.

Like 60 oz.....and the smallest was a 8 oz filet.
