Are the posted questions getting worse?

I'm interested, why use SSIS for backup plans? That does seem an unnecessary extra layer to me. I presume you mean outside of the maintenance plans.

Whats the advantage over Sql agent jobs and/or stored procs or scripts?

On a similar point I am always surprised when I see people writing backup scripts in smo or vb or something, I have to ask myself why.

I personally wouldn't use it for backup plans. But, if you do use maintenance plans in 2008, you're using SSIS whether you want to or not. Might as well know what's going on, how they work, and how you can take better control of them.

    yea, good point.

Wow... thanks for the insight on SSIS, folks. I've mostly resisted spending any decent amount of time on it because of what I've seen. Thanks to other people's posts, it seemed that you had to write some bloody damned script for just about anything complex that you wanted to do.

I've been writing some reasonably complex SSIS recently and I've only once used a script, and afterwards it turned out to not even be necessary (was in my error handling)

I've used scripts a couple of times and even wrote a custom component. Of course, I think if I had understood SSIS logging and error-handling better I probably wouldn't have needed to write the custom component. Like most areas of SQL Server, I know enough about SSIS to get pretty much every job done, and afterwards I find out there's a better and probably easier way to do it.

    [rant]

I'm getting sick and tired of having to deal with people trying to use SSIS without taking the time to learn how to use it first!!!!!!!!

    [/rant]

I didn't expect this comment to generate so many posts.

My rant was intended to be less about SSIS and more about people not taking the time to learn the new technology they start using. What do many do when they reach a hurdle? Don't bother bother picking up a book; don't bother looking it up on the web; just post your questions on SSC. Someone will answer your question(s).

Why bother taking the time to learn anything when someone can answer all your questions for you? That may work for some, but it doesn't work for me and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work for the regulars in this thread.

BTW, good Monday everybody. Hope it a good week for y'all, eh.

  • Some people are definitely not sure about how to research something, or unwilling to try. Or they want a quick solution without work.

I would love a quick solution without work. Unfortunately, I've found the only way to get those is to do a lot of work the first few times.

Seriously?? Who has time to waste on fishing when I can get it much faster somewhere else? Who cares if the fish is on ice?

I think it's more like "do it for your kids so they'll stop whining or let them whine and figure out how to do it themselves"

I prefer to help them figure it out so they can do more for temselves later.

If the market is closed, just steal it from a bear.

You just reminded me of a commercial for smoked salmon, forget who, where the bear is fishing in the stream and a guy jumps out from behind the bushes to get "the freshest salmon possible" and ends up in some sort of cheesy kung-fu fight with the bear, ends up winning and walks off with the fish. Hilarious!
