Steve, do we have an award for this one?http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1007106-392-1.aspx
Should give him a Lincoln award for preserving the Union.
... and people say MY jokes are bad? 😛
Edit: Just can't get my fingers and brain to work at the same speed.
And for all the little Lincolns gathered as others throw their 2 cents worth in?
Seems to have gotten scared off, hope they come back and see there are a few good tips to be found.
I got the impression that they may be someone who would be willing to learn and possibly given a bit more context to the problem if suggestions were made.

I'm hoping he wasn't scared of, but is trying to implement some of the suggestions. A query like that can take a long time to rewrite.
They came back. Final query - no unions, 9 sec runtime.
They were worth making suggestions to.

OP says:
This query currently takes the better part of an hour to run which is not at all acceptable but it does return the right results.
I can see how you'd miss that, as it's in the third sentence, and that's WAY too much to read....:w00t::-P:-D

My input buffer filled up before I hit the end of the query. I aborted at that point.

I hear that happens a lot in the older engines...

Your link doesn't work. There's a single quote at the end of the url. I removed it from the quote above.

BTW, I got an appeal from Itzik that Window functions might not make SQL 11 and he's appealing people to upvote connect items.I have to admit that I'm not sure these are a huge win, or a hugely important add to SQL Server, but I'd like to know more. I think that the article makes a good case in the abstract, but it's hard to read and understand and I'd like to see more practical uses here that make a convincing case. Anyone got a good set of common things that they see, which would be improved with Window functions?
I don't think the additions are that important either, but my main worry is that they would be implemented poorly. Previous efforts with common logical features have used worktables or spools in various modes (recursive CTEs, PARTITION BY aggregates) and none have been sparkling performers, in general. Their other recent similar effort was PIVOT - enough said.
I agree that some of the new features have been implemented poorly, but I really would like to see those window functions in the next release. Once they're in the product I'm sure MS won't take away new features. If they end up with a poor implementation, Service Packs and CUs could be a way to deliver better algorithms.
I'm not sure Jeff's going to vote for ROWS/RANGE, for it would make the quirky update quite useless... 😛
Heh... I, for one, won't miss it. Instead of using the QU and listening to otherwise reasonable fellow MVP's lose their minds, we'll all be able to concentrate on applying Lead, Lag, SUM(), and COUNT() to do some amazing things.
I do fear the same thing that Paul White does... if their implementation is no more effective than what they did with Pivot and Unpivot, the I'd just as soon not see the implementation in 11. I'd rather they take their time a do it correctly.

Maybe my experience is unusual, but I don't find myself needing this sort of functionality very often. On the rare occasions that I do, there are a number of fine alternatives already - including Hugo Kornelis' set-based iteration method, and SQLCLR.
I may be in a glass half-empty mood today, but MS rarely go back and improve stuff after first release.
I prefer your simplified row number checker. It dosn't slow down much and doesn't have problems with unbalanced sets that Hugo's code does.

... we need several hundred years of records to know this, and we barely have one hundred. I also believe that this whole global warming stuff is all politicalized - and as usual, they are full of, well, hot air (to be nice about it).I might argue we need several thousand years of records. The Earth has been around for a long time, and it's hard to know what the pattern is.
I won't disagree. My point is that we need a lot more information than what we actually have.
