Change of topic for a second.

Has anyone here tried reading a pdf format ebook on a Kindle3? I'm thinking about getting a Kindle and I'm just wondering how readable my pdf ebooks will be.

I have a DX. Love it. It works pretty well with PDF. No issues.

The DX has a larger display so I wouldn't expect any problems with that one.

Is the extra cost of the DX worth it?

It depends on the individual. My wife used my DX for a while and didn't like it, but I bought her the small one and she's in love. On the other hand, I found the small too small. I have to hit the page button constantly, it feels like. Not helpful, I realize.

I have a Kindle2 and I'm able to read PDFs okay. The print is a bit small on one of them though, don't know if that's how the PDF is (which it might be but I haven't opened it up on a computer to see) or if there's a setting I can adjust to make the print a bit bigger.

Kindle has font settings that can be adjusted. I have a friend (legally blind) who has to adjust upwards all the time. He loves his Kindle because of that feature.

@Brandie - how do you subscribe to your feed? I couldn't find anything on your site for doing that.

Good question, Wayne. Let me research how to get that set up.

I'm assuming that the font setting won't work with pdf ebooks.

Why assume? Why not just email Amazon and ask?

  • Alvin,

If you have a compatible phone, you might try reading on the Kindle or Nook apps on it for a few weeks and see what you think. I read almost exclusively on my iPhone, and love it for the convenience. Both my wife and son thought it was crazy, but after getting them to try it for 2 weeks, they both do it as well. My wife uses her blackberry, and my son an iTouch.

I've got a AT&T Tilt. The display is too small for reading for any extended period. I may try the Kindle app on my Netbook and setting the displayed image to match the Kindle.

One reason I'm looking at the Kindle instead of just using my Netbook is that my Netbook is useless in the sun. I'd like to be able to read on my balcony on nice day. I can't do that with the Netbook.

  • Direct sun is hard. I usually read with a black background inside, but I switch to black text on white when I'm outside. I can read in the car, or in semi-shaded areas.

I took a nook outside for a few minutes, in bright sunlight, black on white, and it was better than inside under flourescent lights, except for when I was turned the right wat to reflect the sun directly into my eyes.

From what I read, the new kindles are better in the sun than the nook.

  • Not sure that's true. AFAIK, the Kindles (1, 2, 3) and the Nook all use the same e-ink technology. The contrast changed slightly and they can get more grayscale, but the same display.
