3) Stabbing your team members in the back (figuratively) is not a good way of advancing your career. It doesn't take long for people to figure out what's happening and when they do they will hate you forever.Pulling knife from back - I know what you mean.
But is it career advancement they're actually looking for?
Or are they more worried that someone will figure out other people are smarter than they are and they're desperately trying to keep their jobs by making other people "look foolish"?

Either way breeds ill-content

True. But under the right conditions, fear can be fixed and that person can be turned into a productive teammate. Ambition ignores reasoned debate and can't be retrained.

OK, I'm confused. Any ideas? Difference in performance after copying the mdf to a new server.

The two files are logically the same, but not necessarily physically even similar - the file on the new machine probably fits a single physical extent, the file on the old machine may be all over the place owing to historical growth. On 10krpm discs (which typically have long seek times) this can make a big difference, and it's even worse on old slow discs (7.2krpm and slower, but maybe no-one would put those into a server). Also there may be physical differences between the machines: a shiny new server (or desktop) could easily have more than 4 times the SQL performance of the production server described - probably 4 times as much RAM and between one and a half and five times as much CPU power (and maybe faster discs too - a lot of new servers use 15krpm discs typical with seek times around 14% of the 10krpm discs of a few years back).

Modest proposal for you, Gail: Take your katana and wakazashi to the next meeting.
Just lay them on the table and proceed to discuss things normally.

That would be the wakazashi.

Oh this wasn't a planned meeting. This was me getting hauled up in front of someone on the management team and shouted at. Next time I think I'll just be walking away, picking up my laptop and leaving.

From what I understand, she does - she's a hired consultant for this company. Obviously, greatly under paid for what she's going through there.

I work for a very small consulting company. Almost the same as being solo, just there's someone else to do the billing and chasing of money.
Wayne's right, am doing consulting/contract work with this company. That's why I put the line 'Consultants != scapegoats' in the last rant. I'm supposed to be helping them clean up long-term mess and do development that they can't. In reality....

Hey gang... not definite yet, but my wife is talking about letting me spend the $ to go to PASS. 😀Any suggestions on good, inexpensive, close places to stay? Guys to share a room with? Are any discounts still available? It's looking like it's going to cost us about $3k... does that seem about right to you'll?
Do you snore? I actually don't want your opinion on that... ask your wife. Do you snore? 😉
She says yes - a little bit louder than heavy breathing.
Just remembered that I'm also scheduled to give my presentation to my UG on that Thursday....
FYI: I've decided to commit to SQL Rally instead of this. Company won't pitch in any, and it's just too much $$$ to handle by myself at this point. Plus, SQL Rally is closer, and my wife can visit her mother. The cost savings just might mean that I can do a pre-con also!
