Anyone know of any MS plans to improve in this area?

Yes, they have confirmed SHA2 will be present in Denali:

For the time being we have SQLCLR integration, which means we can access the SHA256 and SHA512 variants of SHA2 that way:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.security.cryptography(v=VS.80).aspx

SQLCLR also allows us to break the 8000 byte limit of HashBytes:

I remember trying to get a 35kg barbell set up 2 flights of stairs. Took a while...

I can imagine. Luckily I am no sort of fitness devotee, so that is unlikely to ever be a problem for me 🙂

When I moved in to my current place, it took 4 strong people to get my desk up the stairs and inside. It was almost too large to fit through the door. The sofas were almost as large a challenge

The sofa was the toughest - the doorway is only just large enough, and the banisters leading up made the required rotations demanding (particularly for someone so unfamiliar with 35kg barbells).

    That's good to know.

SHA-224 is still missing though, maybe NIST has deprecated that and I didn't notice?

Thats sqlbits all over with now , great conference. My talk seemed to go pretty well, room full of blank faces when i asked "who uses tally tables". Just hope i didnt suck to much, now waiting for the feedback forms.

I'm sure you did a great job, Dave.

I wish I had the time and money to attend this kind of conference.

Local news: Lots of changes on 1 October. GST went up, income tax came down, and Internet bandwidth increased to 15Mbps from 10Mbps. And I'm moving house.

How much is GST increasing by? We're planning a tour of both islands for next year and had all of the hotel, fuel bills and suchlike budgeted. If we have to increase it all by a large percentage then I'm selling some of the kid's organs.

It went from 12.5% to 15%

Thanks. One kidney should cover that. They have four between them - I'll let them decide.

BWAA-HAAA!!!! Oh lordy! The question I normally ask is "Who of you knows what a Numbers or Tally Table is"? I throw the "Numbers" name in there just in case they know it by that name.

Just like you said... everywhere no one from SSC hasn't been before, I get that proverbial "deer in headlights" stare. The last time I asked it at a local PASS meeting I taught to, only one person out of nearly 50 raised their hand and he had never actually used one... just heard of it.

I'm sorry I lost track of what your presentation was on so let me ask... what was your presentation on and is there someplace where we can see either the deck or the movie?

And, congratulations on the presentation. I just know you did well.

And I DID ask. Yes. That answers my question. Thanks for the bit of insight, Kit.

    You're welcome. 🙂

Speaking of this, I presented at a Developers code camp the other day and had an absolute blast. I've got 12-15 people in a room and none of them knew about parameter sniffing or sargeability or any of the basics of query tuning. It was excellent. I'm thinking about stopping presentations for DBAs and just presenting to developers. I probably made more impact there than I have in several presentations.

I think you're right on the money about making more impact, Grant.

  • Who you are presenting to definitely makes a difference on impact.

I know that my Why I Use Stored Procedures would probably have a bigger impact at a code camp instead of a SQL User group or SQLSaturday.
