Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Derek Dongray (2/24/2009)

Maybe the posted questions have stopped getting worse and OPs are starting to ask sensible questions with well-formatted sample data?

More likely, everyone was so busy chatting about favourite books that no one answered any questions

Yesterday was an interesting day on here. I don't think any of the posters were picked on, except for a quick reference to a White.house employee.

I believe that is a FORMER White House employee.

I reckon it's a farmer. But it could be a toilet-cleaner, there's some Cockney in there.

Nice one Gail - there is probably quite a few people thinking "Whay has no one answered my question, was really that complicated or dumb?"

I must admit I've only looked at this thread today, not that I can answer most of the questions or have the patience of you, Lynn and Gsquared (amounst others!) πŸ™‚

  • Oops, a big failure there for me on trying to quote other people...

  • More likely, everyone was so busy chatting about favourite books that no one answered any questions.

Not true, Gail!! I even got into a dispute with Jeff about concatenation!!

Of course, productivity at my day job suffered yesterday.....

    Sure... spoil my fun... πŸ˜‰

Steve, it wasn't really a dispute. I'm trying hard to adopt the philosophy of not having an opinion that isn't backed by experience and/or test results. Jeff was asking the OP why concatenate in T-SQL at all, instead of just delivering the raw data and letting the UI handle the concatenation. The tests I ran suggest (to me anyway) that it really isn't enough extra work to worry about.

Now I have to apologize for actually bringing up T-SQL in a thread that is about everything BUT....

It's not just about work. It's about doing things where they make sense. Let the database do what it's good at (manipulating data) and let the presentation layer do what it's good at (presenting data)

Same argument for why web service calls don't belong in a CLR procedure (it's a database, not an application server) and why dates shouldn't be formatted in the database.

  • Gail, can I respond to the "doing things where they make sense" through an email or something? I think there is a case where it does make sense, but I hate to turn this fun thread into another place for technical discussion.

Why don't you start a thread in the Strategies forum?

Isn't it a coincidence that "somebody" is claiming to be a former WhiteHouse employee shortly after a new guy just started a job at the very same location?

What are the chances of this fellow now trying to work in the IT business after he figured that neither shoe-catching nor a job in his daddy's business would fit into his interests?

Maybe his intention was to clean windows and he just picked up the wrong definition from wiki?

And doesn't "IT" also stand for "Industrial Tourism"?

So, an "it-pro at windows" would not necessarily have anything to do with computers... Right?

Not yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if The Thread started one soon...

    First there was The Thread.
