Unfortunately I don't have the authority to remove the person or force conformity.

Do you have any control over, or input into, this person's projects?

If so, I'd channel this person's energy into projects that it doesn't matter if he's a maverick or where only one coder is needed. Or make him do documentation.

This is an interesting situation where this person is a contractor that works for a company we hired to come in and assist on basically the only major project that we are working on. I have no control over what this person works on and, yes, issues have been raised with the company and they have spoken with this person. It is not as though this person is a total roadblock or jerk, just that they tend to do things outside of defined processes sometimes and that has caused some issues. Some times it is just communication issues, others it is one of those times where this person believes they know better than everyone else.

Why assume that this person is a male?:-P

Why assume that this person is a male?:-P

Because a woman couldn't possibly be wrong and therefore whatever she came up with would work and wouldn't be considered "Maverick". πŸ˜€ It's guys that mess things up... ask any mother of boys, etc. πŸ˜‰

Seriously, since the English language the following as a "he"

"2β€”used in a generic sense or when the sex of the person is unspecified",

I'm sure that's the definition being used by most people here. πŸ™‚

English is more than happy to absorb all kinds of foreign words and yet we ditched our own gender non-specific pronouns. Such a weird language.

I was considering saying that men are for more likely to be arrogant jerks who are always right in their own heads. : -)

Sadly I've found from experience that that's yet another area where the sexes are equal.

I'm trying! Most people would agree. In fact, they usually describe me as very trying. : -)

Just mentioned it because, at least in the US, a man could get himself into hot water if he used the "she" in that situation. I'm totally okay with using "he" in a gender neutral way, but I've met woman who are not okay with it. In this case they would be because it is describing a negative characteristic, but if I had asked about how you deal with a true superstar coder they would have a problem if I used a male pronoun.

I'm not trying to stir things up (too much ;-)) but this has been my experience.
