    So how do you all deal with a "maverick"/"lone ranger" coder? I think you all know what I mean. That person who goes off and does things however they want and hen get upset when you call them on it?

    Some of these folks are very good indeed and the fruits of their labour can justify their existence. Mostly they're a PITA. Fire 'em, unless they're good enough to be the R&D department.

    That's the key. That domain knowledge, that experience is what matters. I think we too often discount that experience and familiarity.

    So how do you all deal with a "maverick"/"lone ranger" coder? I think you all know what I mean. That person who goes off and does things however they want and hen get upset when you call them on it?

    The last one I knew of, who was supposed to be working with me on a project but never talked to me, is no longer with our company. I didn't have to deal.

    My bosses expect us to be able to do our jobs without micromanagement. But they also hire people who are able to work in a team environment over the lone rangers. If they accidentally hire a maverick, that person doesn't last long.

    Ask them to conform or ask to have them move on to another job.

    I like the idea of asking them to conform. What I would really like to do sometimes though is to remove all perms from that person. Do that right after they do another stunt such as that. Then blame it on a database trigger - "the trigger detects maverick coders and removes permissions - you weren't being a maverick again were you?" - would be my response. All just for grins of course.

    Disclaimer - I have never performed such an action as I have just described and probably won't either until 4/1/....

    Violence of course... actually, you almost never do. We've got a guy that is smarter than... well, everyone. At least to hear him tell it. So we may present him with 66 different reasons why the code he's writing is bad, including documentation from Microsoft, the CAT, various MVP's... none of it matters because, frankly, this guy is smarter than everyone. So even though we can demonstrate to him that his approach is slower than another approach or takes more locks or whatever, he just dismisses it as "not invented in my brain." It's pretty frustrating. The only good news is, he's kind of walled himself into a corner on so much stuff that almost nothing he's working on is important any more.

  • Thanks for your thoughts on the "maverick" coder. Unfortunately I don't have the authority to remove the person or force conformity. I have brought up the issue a few times. Some of it comes down to corporate culture, it's more important get along than to enforce standards. Sometimes this drives me insane! This is when I take a walk or spend some time on the forums. The forums help me in 2 ways:

    1. I feel like I've actually accomplished something when I help someone

    2. I find someone in a situation worse than mine. πŸ˜€

    Unfortunately I don't have the authority to remove the person or force conformity.

    Do you have any control over, or input into, this person's projects?

    If so, I'd channel this person's energy into projects that it doesn't matter if he's a maverick or where only one coder is needed. Or make him do documentation.
