Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • I could look this up, I'm sure, but since we're on the topic of blogs, I'm going to be lazy (besides I can't look it up right now because if i-net restrictions). Anybody know of a way to track readers on LJ?

I'll look it up later if no one answers, of course. But you brilliant people are sure to have an answer for people like me that Just Can't Be Bothered. @=)

(if it offends, please forgive the satire. i'm in a weird headspace today.)

Okay, stupid question time. How do you subscribe to a blog feed? Are any special programs required?

Since you said stupid question time, here's one way to do it:

    EXEC DBCC TimeWarp @param126 = '[blog URL]', @param127 = 'Subscribe' 😀

Wayne, tell Alvin you want your money back for that answer.

There's an RSS icon in the upper right of IE7/8, orangey colored square, click the drop-down arrow, and click on the feed you want. It'll come up, click on Subscribe To This Feed under the feed name, and it'll automatically be in your Favorites (click on the Feeds tab rather than the Favorites tab).

Also, even better, if you're using Outlook, it automatically shows up in your mailbox under RSS Feeds.

Jon - thanks! I think I will like it showing up in Outlook also.

    Stefan,

With wordpress, there are also some Widgets that could be installed on the blog to make the subscribe to feed more visible. They would also help give you insight into how many people just read the feed as opposed to visiting your site.

Thanks! I'll look for what's available for that. I'm just learning WordPress, but it did seem to be the best out there. I do think it is funny that I'm using a MySQL database to blog about SQL Server. Currently my big problem is that I'm not getting emails when someone comments. I'll have to ask my hosting provider if there's a reason for that.

I have stats running in 2 places right now, but I don't think either provides info on the feed.

Unfortunately, no. One of the many reasons I decided to host my own blogs instead of using LJ. That plus I had this domain name and website lying around that I hadn't done much with in the last few years.

LJ is Live Journal. Some like the site, some hate it. I just don't see it used often for more than personal blogging. There are those that do and they seem to like it. My favorite part is the nested comment threads.

I thought it interesting as well - using MySQL as the backend. There are apps to install to help with the admin of that DB too - things like backups and such. I have my backup emailed to me on a regular basis. There is a lot that can be done to "trick out" your blog. I'm still learning stuff with it too.

If you use GMail, I believe the tab marked "Reader" is where RSS feeds will show up there. I haven't done it myself as I just tend to visit the websites instead of subscribing to feeds, but that's 'cause I'm not "hep to the jive" as the kids say these days.

I'll have to check tonight if IE9 has anything new built in for RSS.

I also use GMail's reader. It's nice being able to get to the blogs I want to read no matter what machine I'm using including mobiles as well. Also using an RSS feed keeps me from having to remember/bookmark all of your different URLs. I just go to reader and there they are grouped as I need them, SSC feeds, other SQL feeds, fun feeds etc. Plus it makes it more of a push interaction than a pull. I don't have to go to a blog daily if you only post weekly. I get notification when there is a new post then I read it at my leisure.
