How do you recognize the Episcopalians at a Star Wars convention?
When someone says "May the Force be with you.", the Episcopalians reply "And also with you."
(Don't worry, Steve... I was just joking with Lynn.)

I really must get around to changing my ISP and seeing if I can get things fixed. 🙁Yip, I'm moving to a 8mb region soon but thankfully the 21CN will enabled in Q3. Have you checked in there's a 3G option as they're becoming more competitive?
Check out Sam Knows to check if your exchange is going to be upgraded.
Of course, I might actually get a worse service if I change ISP...
Standard ADSL RAG results
You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512kbps ADSL
You can receive 256kbps ADSL
I currently am on 2M ADSL!
Wholesale Broadband Connect is not yet available in your area
There is currently no 21CN migration date for your PSTN service
Perhaps you're just being *charged* for 2M ADSL . . .
When the connection is being reliable, tests show I actually do get 1.8M/240k. However, when my current ISP set it up, I was told it was marginal. It's only the last couple of months (after about 3 years) it's become flakey.

Yesterday was an interesting day on here. I don't think any of the posters were picked on, except for a quick reference to a White.house employee.

Hey, I didn't delete anything. Heck, I miss half the posts and don't understand the other half. I figure I'll just drop random comments in here and there.
Sounds like my theory on this thread. If you leave it for more than a couple of hours you 20-30 posts to read.

My connection seems to flake as well. I know there's a router that's flapping to new IPs at times because my IM will disconnect and reconnect as a new location. Hard to argue that since the tech support people have no idea what that means.

I dont read/watch about Sci Fi. I more a fan of thrillers and Spy. Tom Clancys books are what I like more. I used to watch Star Trek.

That's the bit I'm not looking forward to... having to talk to a so-called tech support person who will ask me to "unplug all the phone extensions", "try switching the router off and on", etc. (i.e. follow their script) when I've been working in IT for nearly 30 years!
Then there's the problem that the ISP is not the same as the phone line provider so I'll have the finger pointing...
"Must be a problem with your ISP's equipment, have you tried calling them?"
"It's a line fault, call the phone company..."
Sheesh! Hence the procrastination...

Been there done that... here's what works for me once in a while.
Hi, I have a problem with my internet. I've been in it for x years, I've tried a,b,c,d,e,f,g (blow the entire script in 1 sentence). May I speak to level 2 pls?
That usually works and level 2 is a real tech and speaks my language and the problem usually gets resolved pretty fast.

Yeah, I just love tech support calls when I have to make them. I had to define "POST" to someone last night, because my computer at home won't do exactly that any more. I asked him which BIOS version the motherboard had, so I could look up what the sequence of beeps means, and he had to go ask his supervisor what I was talking about because he'd never heard of such a thing before.
(Yeah, I get to replace either the motherboard and video card, or the whole computer. Still haven't decided which will be more fun.)

You as well?
Every time I call my ISP's support, the first thing they tell me to do is restart the machine that the modem (USB) is connected to. Someone explain why rebooting is going to fix anything when the message is "Connection rejected by remote computer"
To make matters more fun, the modem's connected to my server (because there are no Vista drivers), which runs SQL, Sharepoint, AD and a few other services. Rebooting it's a 10 min operation.

Wow!
Just caught up from when I posted yesterday... That is a lot of posts about books...
Probably missed the boat on most of these but here goes:
Dune, I have to say I loved all 6 books, yes it got a bit harder to keep up towards the end, but enjoyable all the same. I have read "Dune: The Butlerian Jihad" which I enjoyed, but I've got stuck with Hunters of Dune - not sure why...
I though from a visual point of view the David Lynch movie was amazing but it's such a hatchet job - rumour has it there is about 6 hours to this movie before they cut it down!
Wheel Of Time - a mate is mad about this and was upset when Robert died and couldn't do the 13th and final part. Never read it myself.
Starship Troopers - this is weird, on the book quiz last week they described a book from the 50's for which the plot sounded a lot like the Starship Troopers movie - I never knew it was based on a a book from the 50's. And now it's been discussed here. I will have to hunt it down at some point.
I'm currently working through a few authors series of books from the library
Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books. Read one of her others but didn't like it, I like these.
Terry Pratchet's Discworld. I have read a few and love them, but they have been all over the place so I have decided to go through them in order! Some of the characters are now making more sense!
Iain (M) Banks... Only just started with the first (non Sci- Fi), which was odd.
Ian Fleming's bond books - odd having grown up with the Connery and Moore movies etc and now going back to the originals.
And Philip Pulman's Dark Materials. Just the 3rd one to go.
Philip K Dick, read a few, and a while ago and liked them, I had heard most of his books were written while high and they get more paranoid as you go along!
BattleStar Galatica - love the new series, but I didn't have satellite/ Cable for a 1 1/2 years so I've missed most of it. I'll have to borrow the lot on DVD at some point!
Steven kings The Dark Tower, read the first two and really liked them. Then discovered how long the series was going to go on for and thought I'd wait until they are all out and buy a nice box set of the lot. Not seen one yet though. Just checked Amazon and it recogmended the following

Maybe the posted questions have stopped getting worse and OPs are starting to ask sensible questions with well-formatted sample data?
And pigs might fly! 😀

Nah. We're just too busy on this thread to notice the whole rest of the site.
