What's humour? You hanging out with Brit's in TN?

He's finally learnt to spell properly. πŸ˜€

Perhaps a course on the correct use of apostrophes next?

That's easy - they're the dudes who collected up all the bread and wine.

'postro-fees are also used to show a bit o' an accent.

Still a contraction (left out letters)

Where they should NOT be used..

In fantasy/sci-fi 'languages to persuade the reader that it's strange and alien.

Mi'kmaq'kae'way does not make me praise your literary skills and creativity. It makes me want to throw the book across the room (or hit back button for online fic)

    HEE!

Gail, you just echoed the sentiment of all my writing professors at Viable Paradise. They'd love you for that line.

Perhaps a course on the correct use of apostrophes next?

    πŸ˜›

Heh... on that subject... how many people think that apostrophies should be used only to show possession or as a method of contraction?

Can you give an example of an apostrophy used for something else?

    Plenty of examples.

    (A) it is very commonly used in English to indicate specific aspects of pronunciation of words in another language; here are 7 widespread uses of apostrophe for that purpose.

    (i) when trying to indicate pronunciation of words in q-celtic languages, linguists commonly use an apostrophe to indicate palatalisation of a preceding consonant. (IPA uses a superscript i as a diacritic to indicate palatalisation, I guess the use of apostrophe came from being stuck with fonts that didn't provide superscript unless one bought very expensive word processors; when technology moved on, the habit was engrained and ' is still used except when people are actually using IPA - which of course means either using Unicode, not ascii or even iso 8859, or using an IPA-specific font and switching from that to a roman font when ordinary English characters are needed).

(ii) when transcribing Russian words to Roman alphabet an apostrophe is commonly used to transcribe the soft sign. (This is a bit strange, although it's much the same use as (i) above except that the language being described is a different one, because some languages using the kyrilic alphabet use apostrophe where Russian uses hard sign - ie for just the opposite purpose.)

(iii) when transcribing Chinese to Roman alphabet using the modern pinyin transcription system, ' is used as a syllable separator when a non-initial syllable begins with a, e, or u and the preceeding character is not -.

(iv) the older Wade-Giles roman transcription for Chinese uses ' to indicate post-aspiration of a consonant (If I remember rightly, WG is the version that gave us "tse tung" for what pinyin renders as "ze dong").

    (v) ' is used to indicate a glottal stop in the roman alphabet spellings of some American Indian languages (probably this is a corruption of the single opening quote symbol).

(vi) since many fonts don't distinguish single opening quote from apostrophe, there are several more examples like (iv) above.

(vii) in roman alphabet transcription of Japanese ' is used for something: I think it's to seperate components in a compound word where there would otherwise be ambiguity.

    (B) In some cases it is normal to use an apostrophe when forming the plural; there are two sorts of place where this happens:

    (1) when using an uncapitalised letter as a noun representing itself: the plural of b is b's, not bs (and any claim in a style manual that this is wrong is just so much bs).

    (2) when working in upper case (so that the S of the plural would be a capital S) and the plural of an acronym is wanted, an apostrophe can be used to eliminate ambiguity. For example if both XYZ and XYZS were well-known acronyms, the plural form of XYZ would be XYZs or XYZ'S depending on whether the text is all upper case or not. (I don't like this one, so I avoid getting into a situation where I would need it).

Until fairly recently, use of 's instead of just s to form plurals was fairly common and regarded as acceptable usage. I think it was still considered acceptable 150 years ago. Now the two sets of plurals listed above are the only ones considered acceptable. (Even "potato's" gets reviled as the greengrocers' apostrophe, when it's actually a valid contraction indicator: the full plural is potatoes, not potatos).

Of course languages other than English often use ' as a morpheme separator and/or as a diacritic: for example in Danish you might see Vax'et rather than Vaxet (but maybe not in MS SQLS circles, I don't think it was ever ported to the Vax).

    Eats, Shoots and Leaves?

Yup. Borrowed it from a friend (M.A English Lit) and loved it.

    It is a great book.

    Have you read Anguished English?

I have not, but I think I have it somewhere.

That is a must read. Still can't get through it without crying from laughing so hard.

One of my favorites is in the 'excuses' section: "Johnny can't come to school today because he has diarrhea and his boots leak" :w00t::hehe:

All this talk of stoned, cold stone .. is making me hungry. One of my favorite restaurants on Grand Bahama Island, is believe it or not, the

"Stoned Crab". - Sit in the dining area about 40 feet the ocean, hearing the waves lapping up on the beach.

I believe their motto is for fish to be called fresh it has to be caught after 4 PM on the same day it is cooked and served to you.

Oh heck - fresh crab, lapping waves. What a thought. It's gonna be a long day.

Haven't been able to eat crab since we went to Alaska in '07. Somehow it's not the same in Ohio....

Well I sent a note to our BIT friend and got a reply back. Apparently

    - he was abused

    - I contributed to the abuser by pointing fingers at him

    - his co-workers laughed out loud at the lack of help from our forum

    - I was not truthful in not taking his side

    - We won't get to see his solution since I locked the thread.

    Well, that's that.

Jon, you should try a different take on it to the Alaskan crab, say Singapore Chilli Crab (works well with blue and brown crab) or one of the many Creole / Cajun recipes. Ohio will take on a warm new glow.

What's worse is he isn't even trying to sound different.

But, yes, ignoring is the only option that doesn't give him validation.

  • Speaking of crab, the restaurants in Jacksonville have some of the best She-Crab soup.

And I'm not a big fan of seafood. But, boy are these soups YUMMY.
