'postro-fees are also used to show a bit o' an accent.

Still a contraction (left out letters)

Where they should NOT be used..

In fantasy/sci-fi 'languages to persuade the reader that it's strange and alien.

Mi'kmaq'kae'way does not make me praise your literary skills and creativity. It makes me want to throw the book across the room (or hit back button for online fic)

What's humour? You hanging out with Brit's in TN?

He's finally learnt to spell properly. 😀

Perhaps a course on the correct use of apostrophes next?

    😛

Heh... on that subject... how many people think that apostrophies should be used only to show possession or as a method of contraction?

Can you give an example of an apostrophy used for something else?

Select 'this is another use for an a-pos trophy'

For this discussion, is an apostrophy the same as a single quote? (I know that they are the same ASCII Code, 39 is I remember correctly.)

You know, I feel for both Gail and the OP here. I think the OP is under a lot of pressure and getting desperate to fix it. And Gail, of course, is plugging right along trying to get everything working right.

Yeah, I tried to help a little but I'm afraid of either stepping on Gail trying to help him, or even worse getting him confused if I continue. I am mostly just reading along and seeing if anything new to me comes up. 🙂 I have to agree with your sentiment, though, Wayne, Gail is VERY good at this.

    @Gail: Trial by fire much?

Lordy, I hope she never degrades to just VERY good!

    @Gail: Trial by fire much?

Actually no. In last 5 years I've had:

    - One database with corrupt log that required a restore

    - One very long restart/recovery (12 hours) resulting from poor (non-existent almost) I/O throughput

    - One corrupt (RECOVERY_PENDING) database that after 12 hours of work and several tricks that shouldn't be in any book) was declared a complete loss.

Also talked a client through a restore to point-in-time (dropped table) over the phone

Of course, that excludes all the test databases that I've killed on my personal machine. No better way to learn than to cause the problem and then try and recover from it.

You forgot to mention the 500+ databases salvaged on different internet forums.

    Eats, Shoots and Leaves?

Yup. Borrowed it from a friend (M.A English Lit) and loved it.

    It is a great book.

    Have you read Anguished English?

I have not, but I think I have it somewhere.

Very much agreed. How that became an SF staple I'll never know.

Yuck - nothing like bad grammar or punctuation or both to really muck up a good book.

I think that may be beyond anyone's ability. Though I do know a good (and funny) punctuation book I could recommend...

Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss? (I have that one)

edit: Sorry Stefan (and everyone else) - I hadn't caught up yet.

Paul, I've really liked those articles. Heck, all of your articles have been keepers. Thanks for being a part of this community, and for the great articles. Keep them coming!

Yep sure will - and thanks. I'm moving house at the moment, and waiting for my new laptop to arrive (my old one is single-core and has a very shonky power connection), and Amanda has broken her finger (on a horse!) so I've been struggling for blog/article time over the last two weeks...:-D

very shonky ... This should go on the WOD thread. lol. I've never heard it before. :w00t::-D:hehe::cool:

Actually what is needed is a course on correct non-use of apostrophes. Although even then I'm a bit dubious about the correctness of a rather recent convention.

Which one? One example that bugs me is shops that sell CD's and Video's *argh*

Why apoologize? You too made a good guess. : -)

All this talk of stoned, cold stone .. is making me hungry. One of my favorite restaurants on Grand Bahama Island, is believe it or not, the

"Stoned Crab". - Sit in the dining area about 40 feet the ocean, hearing the waves lapping up on the beach.

I believe their motto is for fish to be called fresh it has to be caught after 4 PM on the same day it is cooked and served to you.

Oh heck - fresh crab, lapping waves. What a thought. It's gonna be a long day.
