Gail, you might want to bring a certain piece of steel with you if you go revisit that BIT datatype thread. That OP is now on my ignore list.
Edit: I took a look at that OP's posts. On 8/24 he posted something that indicated that he's been asked to do something that should be done by the DBA who is on 3 months leave. After reading his posts, it's obvious that he's not familiar with SQL. Somebody needs to go slap this guy's boss.
all right, where in the heck is the ignore list? Are you guys holding out on me here? I can find the Buddy list, but an ignore would certainly be handy; when i click to add Gail as my "buddy" for example, it just says receive emails yes/no...is buddy with No an ignore?

Patience, yes, but that poster needs an attitude adjustment. Go back through their older posts.I think part of his problem, on top of his poor communication skills, may be that he's being asked to do somethiing that he does not know how to do and he's not ready to admit. Disrespecting the people that are trying to help is not a winning move.

Agreed with both of you on this. Definitely not a way to endear others to help you.

Mine too. This was the clincher (To Alvin)
Once I got it working I will post the solution here for others like you who doesn't know about it.
Steve, intervention time?
Seems like Paul got it working. ((s)he seems to really like large fonts.) IMO, this is someone that is an extreme newby in SS being tasked to do stuff in the dba's absence. I kinda sense an ESL thing might be going on here also... So, let's try to be patient here.
Yeee ... Haaaaa...
Hehe. Yep!

Sorry, but you're not permitted to use my ignore list. It's between my two ears and it does not accept remote comnnections, well, not before I get that implant perfected.. π

I think the whole thread was a mistake, bordering on a train wreck.
See this post for my best guess at what happened here. I'm not sure everyone noticed that post before jumping in π

From the responses, it is entirely possible he/she still doesn't have it right. Paul provided something concrete, but they still have the problem that they don't actually know what 0 and 1 stand for. Or if NULL is allowed. They can translate it with the Case statement, but they flat out stated they don't understand what the DBA told them about what the numbers represent.

I read that, as it was evolving.
It reminded of the story about a psychology professor who walked into class one day with a mule and a big wooden stick. He then told the class that he was going to show them how to train the mule. He then took the wooden stick and whack the mule in the head with it, after which he turned to the class and said: "Step #1 - get the mules attention."
Getting the OPs attention is sometimes much harder than it should be.

I don't think the question was ever that deep. He simply wanted to decode the column using IIF - and CASE is SQL Server's equivalent.
edit: You have to follow the link in my post to the other site where Lennie posted his IIF sample data.

I think in this case it would be "with friends like these, who needs anchors." Works at about the same I imagine.

Good work one and all on the true / false nonsense, its very dispiriting when all you get is grief when you are trying to help.
My favourite part of that thread..
the DataBase Administrator he himself is very confused and coulld not explain logically
More likely "Got annoyed at me for not understanding"

Yeah, well, I felt the need to step in and post the Mom response. Maybe that'll help. Maybe not. But seriously, that was just plain rude.
On another note, I'm seriously bummed that I don't qualify to submit a pre-con session for SQL Rally. Seriously, seriously bummed. @=(

Threadizens,
I posted Friday about an issue in getting OpenDataSource to work on a server. I can't figure out why I'm getting this issue, and would really appreciate any input you'll might have in resolving this!
Thanks,
Wayne
