4 mi. SE of Christchurch should be a land-based quake, yes? Lets hope the aftershocks are also lacking in damage or water effects. Best of luck to you all down there.

It was much easier working with that Idiot of a boss as a contractor rather than his slave.
Your comment makes me wonder about the difference of viewpoint between being an employee and a contractor and if so, to which side is the viewpoint weighted. Does being a contractor give you extra leverage (there are plenty of contracts out there, I don't need to take your BS!) or does the boss have the extra leverage? (you're just a contractor, I can find another contractor who won't give me such difficulties!)
Just as there are good and bad managers, I'm sure both instances above exist. I'm just curious as to whether one is more prevalent than the other. Might be an idea for an editorial or blog post. π
Usually, it comes down to "I'm hourly as a contractor. Are you sure you want me to spend my billable time doing that? Do you really want me working 60 hours this week?"
And beyond that, if they want you to do something really stupid it is much easier to create a document that says "Here's why you shouldn't do that" and when they insist you're not as much in fear over who'll get blamed because you're used to getting new jobs and are probably already looking at that point.
That's been my experience as well. Not just with that boss but also with another job I had last year that was a contract position. There were 4 DBA's on that team 3 were FTE and I was the contractor. For me the job was great because I never worked more than 40 hours but the FTE's normally worked 50 to 60. The only problem I has as a contractor was when the worked slowed down there was no need for a contractor and I had to find another job. Finding another job wasn't too bad but I still miss working with a team of DBA's instead of being the lone wolf.

No LiveMeeting for our meeting. Don't know yet what we'll be talking about. It' could end up being an introduction to our DW building project, or I may have to find some SSIS items to talk about.

Kit, are you and Gus near Tampa? I heard Jonathan Kehayias was looking for a DBA, paying well.
Yes, we are. I'll let Gus know, but if you can direct Jonathan to Gus' LinkedIn account to help the process get going, that would be great. Gus is interviewing in Orlando at the moment, and there are a few others that appear to be lining up for face-to-face interviews (including that Kansas City job).
Thanks for the tip. π

My son and daughter are both grown and living in Dunedin, about 5 or six hours drive south and west of the quake. They felt a shock there strong enough to make her think someone was trying to break into her flat. Hopes and prayers out to anyone who has family in the area.

Still going strong here. Just took a break to run and sink two posts in the ground for a gate. Now back to work!
