ACK! We've been invaded! There's one of those non-DBA types on this thread.
Shush!
He's not the only one π

Um Gus, just what the heck are we looking at there? (scary question I know, I'll probably regret it)
It's a pic of a pet iguana I used to have.

On a side note, why busses? Why aren't people in these theoreticals brought up in too many meetings ever hit by taxis, trucks, private cars, trains, boats, airplanes, street vendor carts, horses, steamrollers or other construction equipment, trollies or subways?I've got a coworker that says "What's wrong with them getting fed up and leaving for a better job? Why do they always have to be killed?"
I always put it in terms of people winning the lottery. Just as immediate a termination of employment as being run over by a snowmobile/bus/gigantic pack of kittens (really, really gigantic pack)/whatever, but a little less emotionally traumatic.

Differential vs incremental, that was my mistake, but I don't care because I'm not a DBA. πACK! We've been invaded! There's one of those non-DBA types on this thread. Quick, someone get me some incense and holy water so I can exorcise the forums.
DBCC Timewarp him out of existence!

Oh dear...
Non-DBA types aren't supposed to be here?
I... um...
Are we still allowing ex-DBAs?

Hi, my name is Jack and I used to think I was a DBA. Actually do more dev both in SQL and .NET than DBA work. DBA work is backups and DBCC mainly and those are automated.

AFAIR, Incrementals haven't been a part of SQL Server. Perhaps in v4.2, can't remember that far, but I think it was always diff in SQL, incremental in Windows, which was confusing. The docs for 7 / v6.5 aren't online. SQL2K shows this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa196675%28v=SQL.80%29.aspx
I think that the exams might have referred to incrementals as the people writing them looked at backup technology which tends to use that terminology. Why SQL changed is beyond me.

I'm also not a DBA, though lately I've been doing some DBA things in addition to my normal work.
However, like Alvin, I normally like to work with the DBA to get a system we both like.

Relax. I'm one of those good SQL developers. I've looked after a few SQL Servers in the past and I'm one of those developers that have worked to help the DBAs, including automating some of their tasks and rewriting other people's poorly written procedures.
Unlike other developers, I can actually hear the DBAs when they talk. π
Edit:
I forgot to say, I've also kept a few DBAs rear ends out of hot water. Wish I had a dollar for each time I've had to do their work. Thank God not all DBAs were created equal. Nice to see that some are more equal than others. π
Thank goodness not all developers or architects are created equal either. I may mean that in a different way than you though, without the ones who don't know what they're doing, I wouldn't get hired to fix things. : -)
