You know what upsets me about this issue? Lots of companies would not have any second thoughts about doing this with SQL Server but wouldn't dare do this with Oracle. That's what you get with managers that do not have the proper qualifications for their positions.
Some other companies are fearless. I seem to work for one of them.:-D

BTW, it's sunday, 1.00 am and I'm taking backups of a 800 Gb Oracle database.
Tomorrow I will have to restore it on a different server and I don't have the mingle clue.
I know what you're talking about, Alvin.

It's Sunday 1am and I'm recovering a 120 GB sql database from a month old backup and a collection of flat files. DBA? We don't need a DBA!

This kind of BS has gone on for too long. It's time to make the managers that make these bad decisions pay!! The big question is: "How do we do it?"

You can't make them pay. Businesses don't do what's right, or what's most efficient. Often it's the most cost effective, and if that means less service or some loss of data to have lower constant costs with a DBA, they'll do it.
It's hard to make a case that this is a huge problem. For every problem db like we're seeing, there are hundreds that just work. They don't get corrupt, performance is acceptable, it's not a big deal.
I think fundamentally we need to educate people more, show that a DBA does things that help, build case studies, promote the profession. Things I think PASS should be doing. Give best practices, worst practices, and actual costs of doing things in a poor way.

At this point they are paying, round about $500/hour for the people they have on site fixing the mess. (and for those who think that's cheap, bear in mind the exchange rate and that costs of most things are a lot lower here than Europe/USA)
It's set them back a few million in total so far.

Gail, a few words of advice. You need to be sure you do a good job. Be sure to check everything twice. Don't rush things. 😀

You can't make them pay. .....
That's not true. I know it may not be easy, but I cannot accept that kind of generalization!
One of the biggest problems is that people are afraid to expose the BS they see. Enough is enough folks.

At this point I just wanna get done and get home. Got a few more hours of data transfer to go first. Have odd feeling I'm going to be seeing the sunrise this morning. 🙁

Same here. A few millions, that's enough to pay a DBA for a few hours, right? 😀

Looks like the data transfer should be done around 6am this morning. Then some schema checks, some backups and outa here.
