What has happened to the nefarious one called Gus?Gus was working on a contract where web access was strictly monitored, so he didn't feel comfortable posting. That contract got terminated a bit early so he's looking again. (I'm his wife so in a position to know. :-D)
Well, best of luck to him and you.
Thanks. 😀 There's something out there, just a matter of finding it and getting it. We got prospects.
Now that I know he's looking I'll put some feelers out to some people I know.

That's good. I'm not a fan of employers who show no loyalty to the employees. Terminating contracts early, policing internet usage like you are a felon - those are nasty characteristics of a bad employer.

Yep, been claiming that title for almost 20 years now. Gus has more experience with SQL than I do, but I manage not to get too lost when the subject of SQL comes around. I owe most of the SQL knowledge to him (the rest from SSC and the Threadizens :-P). It's been four years since I started writing SQL ad-hoc scripts and since I haven't written and executed an UPDATE or DELETE statement without a WHERE clause, I guess he's doing okay in the instruction. 🙂
The last company that I worked at dealt for a short time with a company in India that was supposed to have a really good team of SQL programmers. The owner (who we had over to to the States to get some insight into the business) seemed to know his stuff. But twice, one of his developers ran an UPDATE statement on our production servers without a WHERE clause (updating every customer's address to that of the company). The business relationship between the companies deteriorated rather quickly after that. Most of the data was recovered (yesterday's backup), so only the few customers that had been added before the update but after the backup had to be manually corrected.

Ah...Indians...The company must be situated in Hyderabad.... Usually the companies situated in Bangalore are good when compared to companies in Hyderabad or north of India.

To be fair to the employer, it wasn't a job Gus was suited for. While it would have been nice to finish the contract and have a paycheck coming while he was looking for a new job, I can understand the termination.
As for the Internet usage, well, your choice of the word "felon" is amusing since he was working for local law enforcement. 😀

I don't think I ever knew where the company was located in India. What I do remember is the outrage that a "professional" would do that, not only once, but twice. The bitching about having to recover twice from that was colorful to say the least. 🙂 Access to all databases was cut off after the second recovery (and a quick check to make sure those were the only two incidences of UPDATE without a WHERE clause).
And, of course, I'm not bashing Indian programmers in general, just that developer specifically. The reaction would have been the same no matter the nationality/citizenship of the developer; "What the $%@#* are you doing to my data!?!?!?!?!?!"

Answer: $%@#*'ing it up.
Is $%@#*'ing a verb?

Can we get it added to the official English dictionary? While we're at it, why not add it to all languages? 😀

We had a subsidiary in London where all the programmers were Indians and I used to fume and tear my hair out when ever I have to review their SQL code that they want to release it to production. In our case it was "What the $%@#* are you trying to do to my data?" :hehe:
EDIT : BTW, I am an Indian.. 🙂

Too bad y'all are so far south. We just lost a couple of DBA's, and could use some support in that area. (I'm in Philadelphia).

Thanks all for your confidence, but don't commit your votes until I make it past the nominating committee AND you find out what I think PASS should do. Who knows, maybe we disagree.Best of luck with the Nom Com. And good luck on your run. This could be a tough year to pick who to vote for. Which of the current board are up for reelection?
Lynda (not running), Andy (running), Douglas (not sure)
