  • Hey Tom,

You know Gianluca's Italian, right? 😛

Kanji is Japanese written with Chinese characters...

these two versions of Yokogaki have different Japanese names

Thank you Tom. I thought that Japanese was Japanese, period. It's a very fascinating subject and it's something that's usually overlooked in applications: how many of your columns are of type nchar/nvarchar? Everything works fine until your company opens a new subsidiary in China...

    Hey Tom,

    Paul

Just one half, if you're talking about blood. 😉

BTW, the Scottish half doesn't feel comfortable with today's 36°C here in Venice.

Ah! Still, your English is excellent, especially considering it's not your first language.

BTW, the Scottish half doesn't feel comfortable with today's 36°C here in Venice.

I thought Scots melted at 16°C

  • He Gianluca, come down here. It's a sweltering 10deg C today in Cpe Town, and JoBurg is even colder. That's probably why we haven't seen Gail for a while, she's probably frozen to her desk 😀

  • To those of you who have published articles and thus will probably be more familiar with this subject than me (as I am unpublished), I found this web site www.webook.com and thought it might be a good site to start a bit of fiction writing, but before I start posting there, I wanted to make sure I wasn't losing copyright or agreeing to something that I would later regret because I don't know any better.

Reading the Terms of Use didn't answer that, however. From what I could understand, they keep the right to publish what you post whenever they want. Is this a usual thing? If the story sells and gets published, does their license mess up my copyright? I'm a bit leery of some of the language in the Terms of Service, specifically:

"Member grants WEbook a non-exclusive, worldwide, unlimited license to copy, display, render, distribute, transmit, store, and otherwise use the Content covered by this section for all purposes associated with WEbook’s operation of the Site and WEbook’s business (the “Site License”). "

I get that it is non-exclusive, so you could publish elsewhere, but I don't know how that affects any copyright (which is something I am not willing to give up).

Links to educational sites that take the legalese out of these terms of use would also be appreciated. 🙂

36°C is a bit warm. Just 30°C here right now, with an expected high of 33°C later today.

He Gianluca, come down here. It's a sweltering 10deg C today in Cpe Town, and JoBurg is even colder.

Last winter we had -12°C once, and today (experts say it's going to be the hottest day of summer) we're having +38°C (yes, it raised 2 degrees).

How do we dare calling this zone "temperate"?

That's probably why we haven't seen Gail for a while, she's probably frozen to her desk 😀

I don't find it hard to believe, since thiefs seem to break her flat's windows every one or two weeks...:-P

At midday the thermometer in my kitchen read a scorching 8C, inside.

Had 2 heaters on all day, and the study's only just got to what I would call comfortable.

At least it's not raining here.

  • Gail,

Call me a spoiled American, but if it were only 46F in my house in the middle of the winter, there is a serious problem with our furnace and we'd be calling a repairman.

May I ask why it is so cold in you flat?

To know for sure you'd need to consult a lawyer. But since it's a non-exclusive license, I'm pretty sure that means you retain copyright. Just make sure it mentions somewhere in the document who has copyright.

  • I guess some people think it isn't unprofessional to call someone stupid in professional site such as SSC.

I hope I wasn't ambiguous in my last response to this particular individual.

At this point the guy (?) is just a troll. The one major weakness of social interaction on the internet is that people who deserve a spanking just can't be given one. All that bluster & attitude would disappear in a Tokyo second if the little so&so was personally called on that behavior.

It's the same reason I turn off interactive voice when I'm playing games online. I don't want to listen to pathetic dweebs talking smack from the comfort of their living rooms.

    Furnace? What's that?

In JHB the houses are typically built to stay cool, because we have long, hot summers. They are not built for warmth in in winter. Central-heating systems are virtually unknown here in residential buildings (office blocks yes, along with aircon, but not most residential). I'm not going to waste electricity by putting a heater in the open-plan kitchen/lounge when I'm in the study most of the day.

Winters here are generally mild by your standards (JHB record low is -3.3C). This week has been particularly cold. I haven't checked the weather, but I suspect there's a cold front sweeping through.

Plus, since the kitchen faces South-West, it gets very little sun except late in the afternoon. The bedroom, with wall-to-wall windows facing NE is a fair bit warmer, so's the study.

You are right, but I felt it necessary to call him on it. The only other option we have is to ignore any further posts from, but then the question is "are we behaving professionally."

Perhaps, if we simply start ignore that particular thread at least, until (or unless) such behaviour occurs elsewhere as well.
