Are the posted questions getting worse?

We are planning to experiment with remote speakers this coming September. If that works out, I will be bothering all of you.. 🙂

Roy, which time zone are you in?

  • EST. But we do not have day light saving change.

The idea of multiple PASS chapters having their meeting at the same time with remote speakers sounds interesting. Why should a remote speaker speak to only one chapter at a time?

I like this idea. It would help to drive up attendance and alleviate speaker contention.

What "philosophy" are you good folks referring to?

Presumably something around people who won't take the time to 'fix' a problem 'properly'.

Precisely. My agreement was that people should take the time up front to fix it. If you wait until some future date, it won't get fixed or it will cost considerably more to fix.

We're considering using LiveMeeting in Memphis so that more people could "attend" the meeting.

We've talked about it a few times, but there hasn't been a lot of interest shown from our members. But, I'm willing to try it. I've got the equipment to make it happen.

If you LiveMeeting, make sure you have some people in the room, and if you can, have the remote speaker with a camera. It helps.

I've attended several meetings in our area via LiveMeeting. Works real good for me for the most part - added bonus is saving 2 to 3 hours of drive time.

Try to remember to repeat questions - what is said in the room might be rather difficult to hear for the remote users.

And if you get questions / feedback from someone outside the room, share what you can with the local group.

It's a bit different than when everyone is seeing / hearing the same thiing.

What we're contemplating is using LiveMeeting at our regular meetings, with hopefully a room full of people. The speaker would be live. Some of the attendees would be remote.

I'd still like to try a meeting with a remote speaker. Finding speakers is not always easy and this would certain increase the size of the speaker pool we can pick from. The idea of multiple PASS chapters having their meeting at the same time with remote speakers sounds interesting. Why should a remote speaker speak to only one chapter at a time?

Great ideas. We just need to move forward on implementation. (I know, famous last words.)

I've presented remotely for two different user groups this year. Based on the feedback, it seems to work well.

With another one coming up very quickly 😉

    OUCH!!!!

I immediately blacklist vendors with such a philosophy as soon as I'm getting aware of it...

I agree with you on that one.

What "philosophy" are you good folks referring to?

I was referring to the two statements of the OP:

I have legacy code that does not allow for identity columns, thus I have a table that holds the last "PK" value.

    followed by

Actually, I am the vendor and I don't have the time right now to rewrite all the code to handle identity columns.

That indicated to me the only reason he wants to go for a sequence table is a time constraint, not a business case.

As per my experience, in such scenarios the missing identity columns are not the only design issue the app struggles with.

My experience might not be the case here, I admitt...

Anyway, the solution Paul provided is neat. As usual.

I'd put it a bit stronger than that: there are cases where using a sequence table is appropriate and a column with the IDENTITY property is not a valid design (because it will not work).

I agree. But the reason given by the OP was not that IDENTITY won't work for his scenario. The only reason was "time constraint".

Definitely not a bother, though I might delay since I am hoping I can wangle a trip out there sometime 😉

  • Hmmm, Roy, is Willemstad close to you? $650 in Feb from here. Is there a lower cost time to come out?

  • Willemstad is our capital. 🙂 That is 15 min drive from my house. The island can be covered in 1 hr by car. 🙂

  • My thoughts on Live Meeting is that it is great to use to broadcast your chapter meeting for others to join, but, in my experience, having a remote presenter is a last resort, unless you can get an A-lister to present remotely. In Orlando we are struggling with attendance and remote speakers don't seem to draw anyone. We only have 2-3 remote attendees when we do broadcast. I actually wonder if it's worth the hassles it can bring.

I have done a couple of remote live meetings as a speaker and I find it MUCH harder than an in-person meeting. I'm not going to volunteer to do it anymore, but will do it if asked.

I don't think we'd be too interested in remote speakers if it wasn't for the lack of speakers in the surrounding area.
