  • Well I asked for a clarification this week on a post, and the poster replied that he was sorry I wasn't able to understand his post, and he wouldn't be able to explain it any better for me than he did and additionally the only other folks who may have also had information on this situation were probably under NDA with their employer or client. Plus he complained about lack of a whiteboard. I have to admit, thats one of the better worse answers I've received since I've been here.

I recognize that description! (Personally, I think the guy you're talking about posted some nonsense, was called on it, and is desperately trying to baffle with .... since he can't blind with brilliance.)

Well I have to give him some props on defense because in the end he left me wishing I hadn't asked him anything to begin with.

  • I don't know if the answers are getting worse, but I can see that there seems to be a lack of comprehension when it comes to reading some of the answers.

  • I think a RIF comment is necessary right about now 😉

I don't know if the answers are getting worse, but I can see that there seems to be a lack of comprehension when it comes to reading some of the answers.

I admit to that. I speed read naturally, and I keep forgetting to slow down when I'm on the forums. So I tend to miss little comments in the OP or in the replies and keep hitting my head against the same wall.

I'm trying to be better about not doing that.

  • My original reply for this post might count as a terrible answer. I saw it after I had posted and reread the OP. http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1339745-391-1.aspx

However, I tend to see some awful answers from a famous expert that might never give the right answer, but will always give a rant.

As I was writing this post, I remembered this one as well. http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1329746-392-1.aspx

I try to answer only the questions I'm certain and leave the other ones to the ones who know more. However, I try to keep learning to avoid more mistakes.

    Edit: wrong links

I fall into the same trap. I have been trying to force myself to read slower partly to avoid missing those little things but also I find I enjoy it more when I read slower.

  • The thing that worries me about some of the answers is the game of always asking for test data and expected results even when the question is clear and unambiguous and contains enough information to provide a good answer.

It seems that this has become an automated response with some people - so much so that I was pleasantly surprised recently not to see that sort of response in a thread where someone was asking about the merits or ERM vs Relational as a means of doing something.

  • very true;

i've seem questiosn where the problem query was psoted, the issue is either a syntax issue or something like a case statement manipulation, but a knee-jerk reaction post asking for DDL/Sample data etc was posted.

I've even seen that happen after an answer that fixes the issue was posted.

--help us help you! If you post a question, make sure you include a CREATE TABLE... statement and INSERT INTO... statement into that table to give the volunteers here representative data. with your description of the problem, we can provide a tested, verifiable solution to your question! asking the question the right way gets you a tested answer the fastest way possible!

  • I've seen that too, but also, I've seen that what seems a simple sintax problem is just the tip of the iceberg and the real problem needs sample data and DDL.

However, it's impossible to know what will be the case.

  • I think "The Thread" finally broke. I'm setup for 50 posts per page and this page has seeming randomly selected (but in temporal order) posts from Jan 2009 up through today. Anyone else having a similar problem or is my machine just that old?

  • I'm only looking at 10 posts per page, but they all seem to be in order, not randomly selected.

Change your view and see if it fixes the issue. If so, maybe it's a problem with the 50 post code.
