Are all Patches Cumulative?

  • Forgive my ignorance, but I see that Microsoft has 1 cumulative patch for Sql Server 2000 service pack 2 (MS02-34). The release just a couple days later there were MS02-35,MS02-38, and MS02-39 just released today. Do I need to apply each of these individually, one by one or can I appy MS02-39 only and be covered for all of them? Here is a link to the website I am going off of any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated:

  • If they cumulative then they are. SPs genrally are all cumulative. The other three do not mention a relationship between each other and most likely are not cumulative. But they are not cumlative to the SP. Get each and install, then check for the other issues. I generally wait a week and check forums and newsgroups before I install these as they can cause revisional bugs (not tested as well as the SPs and sometimes overwrite files that have already been updated). Generally this has not been the case of late, I just prefer not to change my position yet. However these updates will most likely appear in the next SP which will be cumulative.

  • Antares has good information. The best thing is to research and be wary. There are sometimes installation orders as well.

  • You were correct, all the information I needed was inside the patch docs, I just needed to look for it. Thanks!
