Good morning. I'm fairly new to SQL administration and I've never applied a service pack before. However, the task has fallen to me. Can anyone give any guidelines or steps to iterate when applying SP4 to MS SQL 2000? Thanks.

there is really nothing to it; you download the service pack , open it and it is a couple of NEXT>> buttons;
it will stop the server automatically,(so don't do it during a time it will affect users), install itself and then cause a reboot in order to start itself with the new settings.
you'll want to back up every database (including master and msdb) before doing this just in case there is an issue; i've done this on dozens of machines with no problems so far...
hope that helps.

Lowell (or anyone that has the answers), just a few more questions, please. Any special considerations for a log-shipping infrastructure? Should I install it on the primary or secondary server, first? Do I need to disable log-shipping first? Etc.? Thanks.

Nevermind everyone. I found a post on another site. The crux of the post (on the other site) was that if you applied the SP to the primary first, then you would have to failover and then apply it to the secondary. So, we applied it to the secondary first and then to the primary. There were no problems during our installation (log-shipping went down for a few minutes, but was restored automatically once both servers were at the same SP level). Thanks.
