Applying 2008 SP1 I am seeing the upgrade fail with the message "The patch installer has failed to update the shared features".
Looking around online I see a few other people have experienced this, but no solution has been published yet.
Has anyone here experienced and successfully resolved this issue?
Thank you.

I believe that this error was caused by a lack of disk space.
It appears that 2008 SP1 does like quite a lot of free space to install itself, but it doesn't actually seem to check whether or not there is sufficient available before it commences installing.

I don't know if your still getting an error or not but i had almost the same issue, i ran the repair shared features then reapplied sp1 and it worked with no further issues.

Repairing the shared components and then rerunning the service pack worked for me as well

This same solution worked for me as well!
Ran repair for shared features and then reran the SP upgrade.
Thanks!
